William Alcindor, o motorista do Queens que foi mortalmente atingido na cabeça por uma bala perdida antes de colidir com um pedestre e bater seu SUV em um prédio, era um avô imigrante trabalhador, disse sua família na terça-feira.
“Ele não gostava de brigar. Ele não gostava de discutir”, disse a filha de coração partido de Alcindor, Gabriella Alcindor, 25, um dia após o trágico assassinato.
“Ele era alguém que não era confrontador. Ele só queria ir trabalhar, ir à igreja, beijar sua mãe, beijar seus filhos, abraçar suas irmãs, amar seus netos. E ele só queria ir para casa no fim do dia.”
Ele não conseguiu. Policiais disseram que Alcindor, 66, estava dirigindo pelo cruzamento da 117th Road com a Farmers Blvd. em St. Albans no momento em que uma bala o atingiu na cabeça, dando início à terrível cadeia de eventos por volta das 16h de segunda-feira.
Parentes descreveram Alcindor como um imigrante haitiano trabalhador. Quão trabalhador? Alguns familiares disseram que nem sabiam que Alcindor estava de volta ao trabalho depois que problemas de saúde recentes o afastaram de seu trabalho de entrega de peças de carro.
“Na verdade, eu não sabia que ele tinha voltado a trabalhar porque todos nós não queríamos que ele voltasse”, disse Gabriella, relembrando o derrame do pai há mais de uma década. “Ele não consegue carregar essas coisas, sabe. Ele parou por um tempo. Presumimos que era isso que ele estava fazendo lá, porque ele não tinha razão para estar lá. Achamos que ele estava deixando coisas. Descobri que ele estava trabalhando de novo ontem à noite com meu primo.”
Ela disse que Alcindor não suportava ficar confinado em casa.
“Em 2013, ele teve um derrame”, disse Gabriella. “Ele teve que parar de trabalhar. Ele só queria encontrar algo para fazer. Ele reclamava de ter que ficar sentado em casa.”
Ele estaria mais seguro lá na segunda-feira à tarde.
Foi quando ele dirigia seu SUV Nissan e passava pelo estacionamento do Popeye’s, onde um adolescente atirador disparou vários tiros durante uma discussão com vários rivais.
Alcindor, mortalmente ferido, atropelou um pedestre antes de bater em um prédio.
Os médicos levaram Alcindor às pressas para o Hospital Jamaica, onde ele morreu pouco tempo depois. O pedestre foi levado para o mesmo hospital em condição estável.
O atirador e várias pessoas ao redor dele fugiram. Não houve prisões.
“Ainda é surreal”, disse a filha da vítima, Sophia Alcindor, 40. “Ainda não consigo processar. Acordei esta manhã — mal dormi, mas quando abri os olhos pensei: ‘Sim, aconteceu.’”
Ela disse que não quer ver isso acontecer com mais ninguém.
“Essas armas, é um problema”, ela disse. “As pessoas não querem falar sobre isso, mas é um problema. É como se você quisesse fingir que não está acontecendo. Ainda estamos tentando processar tudo porque você não planeja coisas assim. Ele estava dirigindo. Ele estava apenas dirigindo.”
A polícia divulgou uma imagem de vigilância do suposto atirador na terça-feira e pediu ajuda ao público para identificá-lo e localizá-lo.
