Entrando na temporada, quase todo mundo esperava que Broadneck fosse o time a ser batido no vôlei do Condado de Anne Arundel. Os Bruins retornaram a maioria de seus titulares de um time que fez muito barulho no ano passado.
O Broadneck, o mais bem classificado, deu mais um passo em direção ao apoio ao hype em casa na quinta-feira à noite. Os Bruins usaram uma linha de frente mais alta e encontraram todas as aberturas ao derrotar o South River, 25-15, 25-16, 25-10 em um jogo-chave da liga.
Os briguentos Seahawks jogaram duro contra Broadneck (4-0, 3-0) no começo, liderando por uma boa parte do primeiro set. Gradualmente, porém, você podia ver os Bruins começando a desmantelar a defesa de South River.
“A primeira coisa que fiz depois da partida foi elogiar nossos levantadores”, disse o técnico do Bruins, Tracey Regalbuto. “Eles estavam no ponto e fazendo jogadas perfeitas para nossos rebatedores pegarem. Nossos rebatedores executaram hoje à noite, e somos um time difícil de vencer quando todos estão batendo em todos os cilindros.”
South River (2-1, 2-1), que já tem uma vitória sobre Arundel em seu currículo nesta temporada, estava encontrando alguns pontos iniciais, mas então a linha de frente Broadneck de Sydney Lawrence (6 mortes, 15 assistências), Kennedy Smith (7 mortes, 5 bloqueios) e Anna Graves (8 mortes, 13 escavações) começou a se envolver. Os Bruins dominaram a rede durante toda a noite, e os Seahawks simplesmente não tiveram resposta.
“Estávamos realmente animados para este jogo”, disse Smith. “Nós nunca os subestimamos ou superestimamos. Nós apenas nos certificamos de entrar e jogar nosso jogo. Vamos continuar lutando para ficar cada vez melhores.”
South River, para seu crédito, voltou a ficar a quatro, 17-13, no primeiro set, mas isso foi o mais perto que os Seahawks conseguiram chegar. Os Bruins seguiram em uma sequência de cinco pontos de serviço de Amanda Protzman, que incluiu dois ases, para aumentar o placar para 22-13 e efetivamente encerrar o set.
Broadneck saiu com muito mais energia no segundo set. Atrás de outra corrida de saque de Protzman e uma segunda de Julia Rubino, Broadneck construiu uma liderança de 7-1 e nunca olhou para trás. Gradualmente, os buracos que South River estava encontrando desapareceram, e Broadneck começou a encontrar alguns em uma defesa de South River que jogou bem e se moveu bem sem a bola. Os Seahawks cortaram o déficit para 18-14 em uma eliminação de Rebecca Austin, mas Broadneck marcou sete dos nove pontos seguintes para levar o segundo set, 25-16.
“Sabíamos que eles tinham uma defesa muito boa e não deixavam nenhuma bola cair no chão”, disse Graves. “Nós nos certificamos de não deixar que a maneira como eles jogam nos afetasse. Nós nos certificamos de que estávamos ditando o estilo de jogo na maior parte da noite.”
O terceiro set foi todo Broadneck. Os Bruins marcaram os últimos oito pontos antes de fechar a partida, 25-10.
A treinadora do South River, Maureen Carter, elogiou o esforço de sua equipe. Ela também estava ciente de quão boa Broadneck é.
“Perdemos, mas fizemos Broadneck lutar por cada ponto que eles conseguiram”, disse Carter. “Broadneck é muito bom. Eles tinham rebatedores mais fortes do que nós, mas nunca desistimos.”
Para Regalbuto, ela está otimista em relação a esse time, mas com cautela.
“Tivemos um grande jogador no ano passado que sofreu uma lesão significativa, e isso meio que interrompeu as coisas na nossa corrida estadual”, ela disse. “Este time é diferente. Nunca tive um time que pudesse ganhar pontos de tantos jogadores diferentes. Vamos ver como nos saímos.”
