Uma nova variante da COVID-19, a XEC, chegou pouco antes do outono.
A nova variante surgiu da variante ômicron que se desenvolveu no final de 2021. Embora a XEC seja nova, Francois Balloux, diretor do Instituto de Genética da University College London, disse à BBC que ficaria surpreso se ela se tornasse a variante dominante durante o inverno.
Pesquisadores do Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicam que a vacina e as doses de reforço devem proteger contra a nova variante. Aqui está o que sabemos sobre a variante XEC e o que você pode fazer para se manter saudável.
O que sabemos sobre a variante XEC da COVID-19
Os Centros de Controle e Prevenção de Doenças ainda não listaram essa variante em sua lista de variantes e vigilância genômica. No entanto, Andrew Pekosz, professor de imunologia na Johns Hopkins, diz que os sintomas são semelhantes a cepas passadas e não parecem ser mais graves.
De acordo com a BBC, os sintomas refletem sensações semelhantes às de um resfriado:

—Dores
-Cansaço
—Tosse ou dor de garganta

Como se proteger contra a COVID-19 e suas variantes
Profissionais de saúde do CDC aconselham crianças com seis meses ou mais a se vacinarem para ajudar a combater a COVID-19 e as cepas dela decorrentes.
Para aqueles que são saudáveis e querem prevenir qualquer doença respiratória, o Condado de Tarrant sugere fazer o seguinte:
—Evite contato próximo com pessoas doentes.
—Fique em casa, não vá ao trabalho, à escola ou faça recados quando estiver doente.
—Cubra a boca com um lenço de papel para conter a tosse e o espirro — e use uma máscara se estiver ao ar livre, para sua própria proteção.
—Lave as mãos frequentemente com água e sabão.
—Evite tocar nos olhos, nariz ou boca.
—Limpe e desinfete superfícies tocadas com frequência, especialmente quando alguém estiver doente.
Se você testou positivo para COVID-19, o CDC sugere os seguintes tratamentos para combatê-la:
—A maioria das pessoas com COVID-19 tem uma doença leve e pode se recuperar em casa. Você pode tratar os sintomas com medicamentos de venda livre, como paracetamol ou ibuprofeno, para ajudar a se sentir melhor.
—Adultos, crianças com 12 anos ou mais podem consultar seu médico de atenção primária: Nirmatrelvir com Ritonavir (Paxlovid) Antiviral. Comece o mais rápido possível; deve começar dentro de 5 dias do início dos sintomas.
—Adultos e crianças podem visitar seu PCP: Veklury (remdesivir) Antiviral. Comece o mais rápido possível; deve começar dentro de 7 dias do início dos sintomas.
—Adultos que visitam seu PCP: Molnupiravir (Lagevrio) Antiviral. Comece o mais rápido possível; deve começar dentro de 5 dias do início dos sintomas.
