Se você tem certeza de que seu candidato preferido perderá as eleições presidenciais, que a IA está vindo para o seu trabalho ou que as mudanças climáticas irão destruir a humanidade, então você foi vítima de uma mentalidade cínica e está longe de estar sozinho.
Nos últimos 50 anos, o cinismo se espalhou como um vírus pela sociedade americana, infectando-nos com a crença de que não se pode confiar em outras pessoas, que o mundo está apenas piorando e não há nada que possamos fazer a respeito. Esta potente mistura de fatalismo e desesperança levou à perda de fé nos nossos vizinhos, nas nossas instituições e nos nossos sonhos para o futuro.
Em 1972, 46% dos americanos concordaram que a maioria das pessoas é confiável, de acordo com a Pesquisa Social Geral. Em 2018, esse percentual caiu para 31,9%. Este aumento do cinismo colectivo não está apenas a destruir a nossa esperança, mas também a afectar a nossa saúde. Estudos sugerem que os cínicos sofrem mais depressão, bebem mais, ganham menos dinheiro e morrem mais jovens do que os não-cínicos.
Mas pode haver um antídoto para a epidemia cínica. No seu novo livro “Esperança para os Cínicos: A surpreendente ciência da bondade humana”, Jamil Zaki, professor de Stanford (Grand Central), sugere que o cinismo pode ser combatido com a vontade de questionar as nossas suposições mais cínicas e corroborá-las com factos.
Se apenas olhássemos para os dados, escreve ele, a maioria de nós descobriria que as pessoas são mais dignas da nossa confiança do que imaginamos, que temos mais em comum com os nossos rivais políticos do que pensamos e que muitos dos problemas que acreditamos ser intratável pode ter soluções, afinal. Ele defende o que chama de ceticismo esperançoso: reconhecer que o futuro é misterioso e que não podemos saber o que vai acontecer.
“Existe a ideia de que ter esperança é como colocar um par de óculos cor de rosa”, disse Zaki, que passou 20 anos estudando bondade, conexão e empatia, disse em uma entrevista. “Acontece que a maioria de nós já usa óculos cor de lama. Ter esperança não é uma questão de desviar o olhar, é uma questão de olhar mais de perto e com mais clareza.”
Aqui Zaki fala sobre o papel da mídia na criação de uma sociedade mais cínica, por que tantos de nós confundimos cinismo com sabedoria e por que confiar nos outros não é apenas para os privilegiados entre nós.
Como você define o cinismo?
Estou usando uma definição psicológica propositalmente moderna: a teoria de que a maioria das pessoas em nossa essência são egoístas, gananciosas e desonestas. Isso não quer dizer que um cínico ficaria chocado se alguém fizesse uma doação para uma instituição de caridade ou ajudasse um estranho, mas pode suspeitar ou impugnar os motivos da pessoa. Eles podem dizer: “Sim, eles doam para instituições de caridade para obter incentivos fiscais ou para parecerem bem na frente de outras pessoas”. Portanto, não é uma teoria sobre a ação humana, mas sobre a motivação humana.
Como o cinismo se relaciona com a confiança?
O cinismo relaciona-se de forma muito forte e negativa com a confiança. Confiança é a nossa disposição de sermos vulneráveis a outra pessoa, na expectativa de que essa pessoa honre a nossa vulnerabilidade. É emprestar dinheiro a alguém porque você acha que ele vai te pagar de volta. É confiar em um amigo porque você acha que ele irá apoiá-lo. É deixar seus filhos com uma babá porque você acha que eles cuidarão deles. Em todos estes casos, a confiança exige uma aposta noutra pessoa. É um risco social e os cínicos pensam que apostar é para idiotas. Eles não confiam em vários contextos, sejam estranhos, políticos ou mesmo familiares e amigos, como fazem as pessoas menos cínicas.
Você escreve que as pessoas muitas vezes confundem cinismo com sabedoria. Por que é que?
O cinismo tem o verniz da sabedoria e as pessoas o veem como uma forma de inteligência e um sinal de experiência. Acontece que, se você olhar para os dados, o cinismo é chocantemente ingênuo e muito mais parecido com a confiança crédula do que as pessoas imaginam. Mas os cínicos agem como se soubessem das coisas e acontece que agir como se você soubesse das coisas é uma ótima maneira de fazer as pessoas acreditarem que você sabe das coisas. Portanto, o cinismo é um tanto gratificante para as pessoas, pois parece sabedoria. Você é tratado como uma pessoa sábia se for muito sombrio em relação a tudo.
Por que o cinismo disparou nos últimos 50 anos?
Duas coisas vêm à mente. A primeira é a desigualdade. Nações, estados e condados que são economicamente mais desiguais são venenosos para a confiança, e os EUA tornaram-se muito mais desiguais nos 50 anos em que perdemos a fé uns nos outros. Curiosamente, os tempos de desigualdade não são apenas caracterizados pela baixa confiança entre as pessoas com menos recursos, mas mesmo as pessoas mais ricas em locais desiguais confiam menos do que as pessoas abastadas em locais mais igualitários. A desigualdade coloca todos nós numa mentalidade de soma zero, onde não há o suficiente para todos e tudo o que você ganha, eu perco. Quando você está nesse estado de espírito, é muito fácil ter a desconfiança como padrão.
A segunda fonte que vemos é a mídia. As pessoas têm algo em mente chamado preconceito de negatividade. Nós nos concentramos mais em informações ameaçadoras do que em informações agradáveis. Este preconceito antigo foi combinado com um ecossistema de mídia hipermoderno que nos alimenta com tudo o que for necessário para nos manter clicando, rolando e assistindo, o que não é o mesmo que informação que nos deixaria felizes ou esperançosos, ou mesmo informação que seja precisa. Você pode pensar que se assistir muitas notícias você estará mais informado, mas acontece que em muitos casos você está menos informado. Por exemplo, as pessoas que assistem a muitas notícias acreditam que a criminalidade violenta está a aumentar, mesmo quando está em declínio.
O seu livro sugere que o ceticismo – e não o otimismo – é o melhor antídoto para o cinismo. Por que?
O cinismo e o ceticismo são frequentemente confundidos, mas na verdade são bem diferentes. Você pode pensar em um cínico como um advogado na acusação contra a humanidade. Eles captam toda e qualquer evidência sobre a maldade e a conivência humanas e explicam ou ignoram as evidências de qualidades humanas positivas. Os otimistas, ou confiantes ingênuos, também pensam como advogados, mas estão hiperconcentrados em qualquer sinal de bondade humana e ignoram qualquer sinal de comportamento prejudicial. Os céticos pensam mais como cientistas. Eles não têm julgamentos gerais sobre as pessoas que eles ignoram. Em vez disso, tentam avaliar as evidências sempre que se encontram com uma nova pessoa ou numa nova situação. Por isso o ceticismo, muitas vezes confundido com cinismo, pode ser um grande antídoto para isso.
No verão de 2022, você convidou americanos para participarem de chamadas de 20 minutos no Zoom com rivais políticos para discutir controle de armas, mudanças climáticas e aborto. O que as pessoas aprenderam umas sobre as outras nessas conversas?
Se olharmos para as provas, há uma quantidade incrível de pontos em comum, mesmo entre Democratas e Republicanos, que a maioria dos americanos desconhece. Então, o que as pessoas aprenderam nessas conversas de 20 minutos? Primeira: que um membro do outro lado seleccionado aleatoriamente é muito mais razoável, tem uma mente muito mais aberta e é muito menos hostil do que imaginavam que fosse um estranho ou um rival. [Two]quando conversaram sobre questões, aprenderam que tinham alguns pontos em comum, e isso diminuiu imensamente sua indignação e ódio em relação ao outro lado. Porque agora eles estavam pensando no outro lado real, em vez da imagem que temos em mente.
Muitas vezes me perguntei se a capacidade de confiar nos outros é um sinal de privilégio. Dependendo da nossa raça, classe, género e formação educacional, alguns de nós têm maior probabilidade de ser tratados com respeito e empatia do que outros. Onde você pousa nisso?
É muito fácil chegar à conclusão de que a esperança é uma forma de privilégio e talvez até tóxica – que nos faz ignorar os nossos problemas, ou melhor, ignorar problemas que não temos, mas que outras pessoas têm. Você pode se surpreender ao descobrir que algumas das pessoas menos confiáveis e mais cínicas são aquelas que têm privilégios, dinheiro e poder. E, na verdade, as pessoas que enfrentam dificuldades em termos do seu estatuto socioeconómico tendem a ser mais interdependentes e dependentes da confiança. Sei que estou um pouco quebrado aqui, mas uma das coisas surpreendentes de fazer milhares de horas de pesquisa para este livro é que descobri repetidamente que nossas suposições não estão apenas erradas, elas também são exatamente o oposto do certo.
Você acha que a sociedade americana é capaz de reverter nossa descida ao cinismo?
Acho que somos capazes disso, e acho que uma das razões é que já fizemos isso antes. As décadas de 1890 e 1900 foram uma época terrível para a vida social nos Estados Unidos. Houve extrema desconfiança, extrema polarização, retrocesso em questões como raça, o surgimento das leis Jim Crow. Foi uma época culturalmente horrível em todos esses aspectos diferentes e essa dor estimulou o que é chamado de movimento progressista nas primeiras décadas do século XX. Havia toda essa organização trabalhista e grupos e movimentos sociais que agitavam tudo, desde o jardim de infância público até o sufrágio feminino, a FDA e o Serviço de Parques. Havia esse senso de responsabilidade um com o outro. Este valor crescente da conexão. Isso poderia acontecer novamente? Sim, poderia. Isso acontecerá de novo? Eu não faço ideia.
O que podemos fazer como indivíduos para mudar esta tendência?
Existem algumas coisas. A primeira é ser mais cético – verificar os nossos sentimentos cínicos. Eu faço isso o tempo todo. Quando me vejo suspeitando de pessoas, tento ao máximo dizer: “Você é um cientista, que evidências você tem para essa afirmação?” E muitas vezes a resposta é: “Não tenho provas que apoiem esta suposição sombria”. Uma vez que tenhamos a mentalidade de ser mais curiosos sobre nossos próprios pensamentos, podemos interromper o ciclo do cinismo.
Uma segunda coisa que podemos fazer é assumir mais riscos sociais. Por causa do viés da negatividade, calculamos mal as vantagens e desvantagens da vida social. Superestimamos a probabilidade de que, se confiarmos em alguém, essa pessoa nos traia e subestimamos a probabilidade de que as coisas corram bem. Então tento recalibrar e dizer: “Com base nos dados reais de como as pessoas são, provavelmente deveria confiar mais nelas”. Earnest Hemingway disse que a melhor maneira de descobrir se você pode confiar em alguém é confiar nessa pessoa. Acho que ele está certo, mas também é verdade que quando você confia nas pessoas, você revela o que elas têm de melhor. Então você não apenas aprende sobre eles, você os muda. Tento dar às pessoas muito mais oportunidades do que antes para me mostrarem quem elas são, e muitas vezes elas me mostram algo realmente ótimo.
