“Esse é meu irmão”, disse Greenard sobre Ryan Tomberlin. “Meu relacionamento com ele também coloca as coisas em perspectiva. Você nem sempre tem o pior. Algumas pessoas adorariam estar no meu lugar e fazer o que eu posso fazer, então, nos dias em que estou me sentindo cansado ou dolorido, eu apenas penso em pessoas como ele, minha filha [Rayna]minha esposa [Alta].”
Greenard também pensa em sua mãe, Carmen Greenard-Varnum, que em um ponto criou três filhos – Victoria, Mack e Jonathan – através de um segundo turno noturno no trabalho. Ele pensa em seu pai, Mack Greenard Jr., que nutriu sua paixão pelo futebol, mas era um alcoólatra que faleceu de insuficiência cardíaca congestiva em 2014. Ele pensa em seu padrasto, Washington Varnum Jr., que o ajudou a passar por essa dor antes de morrer em 2021 para a COVID-19.
Uma lembrança da mesa do café da manhã ficou na memória de Greenard.
“Às vezes, as luzes mal estavam acesas”, ele disse ao Minnesota Star Tribune. “Cara, foi difícil. Todo mundo tem histórias, mas nós temos algumas histórias. Nós tivemos uma vida melhor do que os outros, mas não foi doce. Tivemos que trabalhar duro – [Carmen] teve que trabalhar duro. A história do leite Carnation: nós três estávamos dividindo o cereal da Carnation [evaporated] leite.”
“É por isso que continuo”, disse Greenard. “Nunca mais estaremos naquela situação em que temos que compartilhar qualquer coisa.”

Greenard-Varnum sabia que Jonathan, seu filho mais novo, seria um atleta quando ele era uma criança correndo atrás de ovos de Páscoa. Ele era muito mais rápido do que todos os outros, o que também era o caso quando ela colocou seus dois filhos no futebol juvenil. Greenard decidiu seguir uma carreira na NFL quando colocou um capacete aos 5 anos de idade.
