NOVA IORQUE (AP) – O em apuros prefeito da cidade de Nova York, Eric Adams, chegou a um tribunal federal na manhã de sexta-feira para ser acusado de aceitar contribuições ilegais de campanha e viagens gratuitas ao exterior de pessoas que queriam comprar sua influência no governo municipal.

Em troca, disseram os promotores, Adams fez favores a seus clientes. Isso incluiu ajudar a Turquia a obter aprovações do corpo de bombeiros para abrir uma nova torre diplomática em Manhattan, apesar das preocupações com o seu sistema de segurança contra incêndios, disseram os promotores.
Adams diz que é inocente. Seu advogado disse que não era incomum nem impróprio que um funcionário do governo aceitasse alguns benefícios de viagem. O prefeito negou ter aceitado conscientemente uma contribuição ilegal de campanha e disse que qualquer ajuda que deu às pessoas que navegavam na burocracia da cidade era apenas parte do seu trabalho.

Em comentários públicos na quinta-feira, Adams pediu aos nova-iorquinos que evitassem fazer qualquer julgamento até ouvirem sua defesa.
Seu advogado, Alex Spiro, disse aos repórteres que as vantagens de viagem e upgrades de assento aceitos por Adams eram comumente oferecidos a VIPs e membros do Congresso.
“É isso que as companhias aéreas fazem”, disse ele, observando que muitas das cobranças estão relacionadas a viagens que Adams fez anos atrás, quando era presidente do distrito de Brooklyn.
Até agora, Adams resistiu aos apelos para renunciar de seus críticos, de alguns republicanos e do campo de potenciais adversários democratas nas primárias que ele deverá enfrentar nas primárias para prefeito de junho próximo. No início de setembro, investigadores federais apreenderam dispositivos do comissário de polícia, do reitor das escolas, de dois vice-prefeitos e de outros confidentes de confiança de Adams.
