O coordenador de equipes especiais da BYU e treinador de defensive ends, Kelly Poppinga, travou suas batalhas contra quarterbacks de elite no passado.
Quando ele estava na equipe da Virgínia, ele foi encarregado de planejar o jogo contra o então astro de Louisville, Lamar Jackson. O futuro MVP da NFL foi um dos jogadores mais dinâmicos do esporte — ganhando um troféu Heisman, pois ele contabilizou mais de 9.000 jardas de passe e 4.000 jardas de corrida.
Agora, Poppinga acredita que a BYU enfrentará um teste semelhante esta semana quando o quarterback do Kansas State, Avery Johnson, chegar à cidade.
“Ele é um atleta especial. Sabe, eu estava na Universidade da Virgínia e joguei contra Lamar Jackson algumas vezes diferentes. Eu sinto que esse cara é um atleta tão especial quanto aquele cara”, disse Poppinga.
Ele continuou, “Será um grande desafio para nossa defesa e nosso time parar esse cara, especialmente correndo. Ele sabe como estender jogadas, sabe como fazer a leitura de zona. Lança a bola bem o suficiente para fazer algumas jogadas no campo.”
Johnson foi aclamado como um dos melhores jogadores jovens do país. O Kansas State chutou seu quarterback veterano, Will Howard, para o meio-fio na última offseason em favor de começar com seu líder do segundo ano; Johnson foi nomeado para a lista de observação do Maxwell Award em julho.
Até agora neste ano, Johnson contabilizou mais de 490 jardas de passe e 200 jardas de corrida. Contra o Arizona, há uma semana, ele teve 156 jardas pelo ar e 110 no chão.
Seu conjunto de habilidades pode ser uma tempestade perfeita para uma defesa da BYU que tem lutado para parar o ataque terrestre do quarterback às vezes. O coordenador defensivo Jay Hill comparou Johnson ao quarterback da SMU Kevin Jennings.
“Ele me lembra muito o quarterback da SMU que acabamos de enfrentar. Ele era um bom arremessador, bom atletismo, conseguia correr com a bola”, disse Hill. “Achei que fizemos um bom trabalho de contê-lo. Tivemos os mesmos desafios esta semana. Avery Johnson consegue correr. Ele consegue arremessar.”
Os Cougars limitaram Jennings a correr menos de 40 jardas, mas ele escapou várias vezes para estender as jogadas.
Hill antecipa que colocará mais do que apenas um espião em Johnson para conter o ataque apressado. Em vez disso, ele tentará confundir o quarterback mais jovem com uma série de olhares ao longo do jogo.
“O quarterback é um atleta muito, muito bom”, disse Hill. “Vamos usar muitas coisas diferentes com ele. Haverá momentos em que faremos alguma espionagem. Haverá momentos em que tentaremos exercer pressão para mantê-lo alerta. Cobertura, para mantê-lo alerta. Haverá muitas coisas diferentes que usaremos.”
