Quando a coletiva de imprensa de sexta-feira com os executivos do Utah Jazz Ryan Smith, Danny Ainge e Justin Zanik começou, uma das primeiras perguntas foi sobre algo notável que Ainge – CEO do Jazz Basketball – disse no final da temporada passada: que o time estava “pronto para ir caça grossa.”
A entressafra, na realidade, foi significativamente aquém do grande jogo. O Jazz fez suas escolhas no draft, contratou veteranos menores, manteve seus jogadores atuais e, de outra forma, ficou quieto. Então o que aconteceu?
“Eu deveria ter usado minha camisa de alce”, brincou Ainge.
Em seguida, ele pediu ao gerente geral do time que respondesse à questão essencial do grande jogo.
“Vocês viram como as coisas evoluem na entressafra”, disse Zanik. “Nesta organização, somos extremamente agressivos na busca de todos e quaisquer meios necessários para tornar este elenco de nível de campeonato. Quando essas oportunidades surgirem, estaremos prontos para isso. Não houve nenhum.
“E então, para ficarmos sentados e não fazer nada, decidimos que nosso plano era focar completamente em nossos jovens e no melhor jogador do nosso elenco, Lauri Markkanen.”
Resumindo, o Jazz ampliou sua janela de contenção nesta entressafra.
Isso não significa que a extensão de Markkanen não fosse um item significativo na lista de verificação do Jazz. Com uma renegociação e extensão do contrato de 5 anos no valor de US$ 238 milhões, o jogador de 27 anos está agora vinculado a Utah até a temporada 2028-29. Além disso, a administração acredita que seu contrato não se tratava apenas de reter alguém com seus talentos, mas que ele pode ajudar a desenvolver os jovens jogadores do restante do elenco.
“Lauri ajuda nossos jovens jogadores a se desenvolverem. Ele é um líder em desenvolvimento”, disse Zanik. “Você não pode ter apenas um bando de jovens tentando se criar. Acho que você já ouviu a frase: ‘filhotes não podem criar filhotes’”.
Os “filhotes” mencionados acima são o sortimento de jovens músicos do Jazz. Internamente, eles geralmente se referem a sete jogadores como parte do núcleo jovem em potencial: o central do terceiro ano Walker Kessler, os jogadores do segundo ano Taylor Hendricks, Keyonte George e Brice Sensabaugh e os novatos Cody Williams, Isaiah Collier e Kyle Filipowski.
Esses jogadores, porém, lutarão por minutos com veteranos consagrados. Collin Sexton teve sua melhor temporada no ano passado e chega ao ano como claramente o segundo melhor jogador do Jazz. Jordan Clarkson e John Collins tiveram dificuldades, mas fizeram com que o veterano continuasse exigindo tempo de jogo. E a equipe adicionou três novos veteranos estabelecidos – Patty Mills, Svi Mykhailiuk e Drew Eubanks – que também podem querer encontrar o tribunal.
É um pouco evocativo do enigma do Jazz nas duas últimas temporadas: eles deveriam se concentrar totalmente no desenvolvimento dos jovens jogadores ou dar aos veteranos uma chance justa?
Zanik, porém, acredita que a equipe está começando este ano de um lugar diferente.
“Acho que a diferença neste ano é que estamos começando a construir uma base de profundidade muito boa. Acontece que eles são muito jovens. Então, em vez de termos três novatos, temos sete caras agora com menos de 23 anos”, disse Zanik. “Nosso crescimento virá do desenvolvimento de nossa base de talentos para que possamos vencer mais jogos agora e no futuro. Isso não acontece da noite para o dia – mas o que é importante no desenvolvimento é jogar.”
Essa tarefa de desenvolvimento é atribuída ao técnico Will Hardy e sua equipe. Hardy, entrando em sua terceira temporada, teve o quinto ano de contrato assinado pela equipe na sexta-feira, vinculando o jovem treinador à equipe até a temporada 2026-27. Dada a juventude do Jazz, pode levar muito tempo para que o Jazz supere a reconstrução e se torne um time concorrente novamente, mas a equipe do Jazz acredita que Hardy é o homem certo para o trabalho.
“Foi rápido, sim, foi muito fácil”, disse Ainge sobre sua decisão de escolher a opção de Hardy. “Amamos o rumo que ele está tomando, amamos o companheiro de equipe que ele é. Ele está muito animado para este ano com a chance de desenvolver esses jovens jogadores.”
Smith foi então questionado sobre como ele se sentia por ser dono de um clube que estava passando por uma reconstrução – afinal, alguns grupos proprietários não têm paciência e, em vez disso, priorizam a vitória imediata.
“Olhei ao redor da liga e mais de 90% (times) são formados em casa. Esse é o negócio em que atuamos. Portanto, é melhor ficarmos realmente bons nisso e também queremos o máximo de tentativas possível”, disse Smith.
Sem grandes jogos caçados neste verão, pode haver uma escassez de grandes jogos para o Jazz nesta temporada. Mas Smith diz que está otimista com a chegada deles.
“Sou um ser humano competitivo. Acho que analisar e ver como começamos e as decisões que tomamos provavelmente é um pouco contra-intuitivo em relação a como quero começar meu mandato – mas, na verdade, adoro isso”, continuou Smith. “Adoro trabalhar com esses caras e estou totalmente convencido. Se quisermos ganhar um campeonato, teremos que fazer do nosso jeito, e acho que faremos. Estou 100% confiante nisso.”
