Um ataque ofensivo equilibrado e uma defesa abrangente levaram Dulaney à sua sétima vitória consecutiva para começar a temporada. Os Lions varreram o anfitrião Catonsville na quarta-feira, 25-14, 25-8, 25-14.
O técnico Cary Lyon está em sua 21ª temporada em Dulaney e não esperava um início de 7-0.
“Eu já?” ele respondeu.
“Não sei se temos algum superstar. Tenho cinco ou seis outsiders”, disse Lyon. “Acho que meu time é inteligente, sabe jogar na defesa e sacar.”
Contra Catonsville, os Lions tiveram cinco jogadores com pelo menos quatro eliminações. Junior Ellie Leone liderou com nove eliminações. Cami Reed e Devin Degannes tiveram seis eliminações cada e Brook Adams e Diana Easton tiveram quatro eliminações cada. Catonsville foi liderada por Molly Snyder com quatro eliminações. Kaitlyn Welsh e Hadley Hobbs tiveram duas eliminações cada.
O primeiro set foi o único em que os Comets não ficaram muito para trás no início, mas mesmo assim foi só por um piscar de olhos. Uma morte de Cecelia Borsh, um ace de Elizabeth Schwenk e um bloqueio de Borsh deram aos Comets uma vantagem inicial de 3-1, mas os Lions marcaram 11 dos 13 pontos seguintes e avançaram para a vitória.
Reed conseguiu quatro rebatidas somente no primeiro set.
As Lions começaram o segundo set com nove pontos seguidos e Leone assumiu o controle com a ajuda das levantadoras Serafina Reckhamp e Easton. Ela converteu sete de suas nove eliminações no segundo set e isso incluiu uma eliminação de ponta e de linha de trás.
“Eu coloquei mais em um ponto dessa vez, como se eu mirasse em um ponto”, disse Leone. “Eu percebi que o líbero deles estava conseguindo [in the first set] e acho que isso entrou na minha cabeça.”
“Ela é uma atacante externa. Ela é uma das minhas garotas de 5 pés e 6 polegadas”, disse Lyon sobre Leone. “Ela bate com top spin, assim como Cami, a outra atacante externa.”
No set final, os Lions abriram uma vantagem de 9-4 e contaram com um forte desempenho do veterano atacante central Degannes, que conseguiu quatro rebatidas no set final.
“Pela primeira vez ela finalmente está pulando e alcançando. Ela costumava puxar para baixo e bater na rede ou ser bloqueada”, disse Lyon. “Ela bateu 1.000. Ela estava 6-para-6. Nós nem demos a ela nenhum set no segundo set.”
A defesa mesquinha dos Lions nunca deixou os Comets fazerem nenhuma corrida.
“Dulaney definitivamente tinha uma boa defesa e estávamos batendo direto nos jogadores deles mais do que batendo para longe deles e encontrando seus buracos, o que definitivamente precisamos trabalhar”, disse o técnico de Catonsville, Milan Amos, que se formou em Dulaney. “Mas acho que o ataque será uma coisa fundamental para trabalhar na próxima vez que os virmos.”
Amos, cujo elenco caiu para 2-5, está animada com o desenvolvimento de alguns de seus jogadores menos experientes, como Snyder.
“Ela tem muito que crescer, mas é uma jogadora fenomenal, nunca tinha tocado em uma bola de vôlei e este é apenas seu segundo ano jogando, acredite ou não”, disse Amos.
Os Comets também receberam contribuições sólidas da líbero Kira King, da levantadora júnior Schwenk e da jogadora caloura Welsh.
“Tenho um time muito jovem”, disse Amos. “Só precisamos colocar algumas coisas em jogo e moldá-los um pouco, para realmente colocar o conjunto de habilidades deles lá. Mas eles são tão jovens e tão atléticos que não estou preocupado que até o final da temporada eles serão um time completamente diferente.”
Enquanto isso, Lyon está observando um time com aspectos que ele não via em sua longa gestão.
“Este é o time mais equilibrado que já tive. Não tenho nenhum jogador dominante em lugar nenhum”, disse ele.
Depois de receber o Carver na sexta-feira, os Lions não jogarão novamente até 4 de outubro, quando viajarão para enfrentar o rival Towson.
Towson os derrotou em cinco sets na temporada passada e os Lions retribuíram o favor ao eliminar os Generals nos playoffs regionais em cinco sets.
“Ah, estou ansioso por isso”, disse Leone.
