Isso representa um punhado de proclamações que surgiram depois que Andrews, três vezes tight end dos Ravens no Pro Bowl, jogou apenas 21 snaps e não pegou um único passe na vitória dos Ravens por 28-25 sobre o Dallas Cowboys no último domingo.
Andrews apenas sorriu na quinta-feira ao ser informado dessa onda de ceticismo. “Tudo isso é bom e outras coisas, mas eles não sabem o que está acontecendo dentro deste prédio”, disse ele. “Eles não estão me observando em todas as jogadas. Eles não estão vendo o trabalho que estou realizando. Todas as coisas boas vêm com o tempo. Adoro estar aqui com esta equipe. Essas coisas virão.”
Para que conste, ele disse que não está lidando com nenhuma lesão persistente: “Sinto-me ótimo. Acho que se você ligar o filme, verá que estou me movendo, fazendo muitas coisas melhor do que nunca. É diferente. Temos uma equipe diferente. Mas ainda me sinto incrivelmente bem, rápido e forte. Sou o mesmo jogador de sempre. É só que as bolas não vieram na minha direção.”
Não importa que os Ravens tenham arremessado apenas 15 vezes enquanto se apoiavam em seu jogo de chão para acertar uma frágil frente de Dallas. Não importa que Andrews tenha bloqueado de forma brilhante (nota 90,2 do Pro Football Focus) para ajudar nesse esforço. Não importa que ele tenha perdido a temporada de 2023 devido a uma queda no quadril que quebrou seu tornozelo ou que ele se envolveu em um terrível acidente de carro há pouco mais de um mês.
Os fãs analisaram alguns números simples – oito alvos, seis recepções, 65 jardas, nenhum touchdown em três jogos no início desta temporada – e decidiram que o tight end de 29 anos não é mais a opção número 1 para o quarterback Lamar Jackson.
A partir de uma remoção fria, não é uma escolha selvagem. Excluindo os jogos em que se machucou, Andrews nunca foi alvo de menos de uma dúzia de vezes em um período de três jogos de 2019 a 2023. Não está mais claro se esse é o caso, dadas as subidas do colega tight end Isaiah Likely e da escolha do primeiro turno do draft de 2023, Zay Flowers.
Mas os Ravens dirão que é prematuro presumir que Andrews não entregará jogos vintage nesta temporada. O técnico John Harbaugh disse que o uso de craques aumentará e diminuirá à medida que os planos de jogo mudam consideravelmente de uma semana para a outra. O coordenador ofensivo Todd Monken não percebeu que Andrews jogou tão pouco contra o Dallas.

Cris Collinsworth foi o principal alvo do Cincinnati Bengals durante grande parte da década de 1980, então ele sabe como é estar no lugar de Andrews.
Collinsworth, que ajudará a convocar o confronto do Ravens no Sunday Night Football com o Buffalo Bills pela NBC, suspeita que Andrews ainda esteja se recuperando de uma lesão, apesar de suas declarações em contrário. “Lesionar-se é difícil e cria oportunidades para outras pessoas”, disse ele. “Isaiah Likely jogou muito bem. Andrews não é o único tight end da elite que enfrenta questões sobre metas cada vez menores. Travis Kelce, do Kansas City Chiefs (consideravelmente mais famoso e cinco anos mais velho que seu colega de Baltimore), conseguiu apenas oito passes para 69 jardas em três semanas.

“Realmente não”, disse ele quando questionado se pensa na sua falta de metas. “Para mim, sempre foi uma questão de equipe. [Kelce] estava certo com isso; trata-se de execução. Escusado será dizer que também sou uma pessoa competitiva. Procuro ajudar esta equipe a vencer os jogos e, se puder fazer isso de qualquer maneira possível, seja bloqueando ou pegando a bola, farei isso. Ele não exigiu uma explicação de Monken ou de qualquer outra pessoa sobre sua carga de trabalho incomumente pequena contra os Cowboys.
“Não. Se você olhar o plano de jogo que tínhamos, percebemos que contamos com uma grande equipe durante a maior parte do jogo”, disse Andrews. “Fora isso, eu estava em campo. Mas estávamos nos movendo tão bem. Atacamos a defesa com algo que pensávamos que iria funcionar. ‘Monk’ manteve isso, e está tudo bem para mim.”
Andrews chegou aos Ravens como membro de uma sala muito unida, na qual inevitavelmente competiu por snaps e alvos com seus amigos Hayden Hurst e Nick Boyle.
