O debate presidencial de terça-feira à noite entre a vice-presidente Kamala Harris e Donald Trump criou uma tela dividida entre os dois candidatos, uma que deveria nos fazer refletir sobre o que cada partido tem a nos oferecer para o futuro do nosso país. Por um lado, testemunhamos Harris como a adulta na sala que, imediatamente após entrar no palco do debate, foi até Trump, se apresentou e estendeu a mão para o ex-presidente.
Ao longo do debate de 90 minutos, Harris se comportou de forma composta, digna e autoconfiante, ao mesmo tempo em que demonstrava uma amplitude de conhecimento sobre assuntos estrangeiros e domésticos. Da guerra na Ucrânia à situação das mulheres tentando fazer um aborto em vários estados após a anulação de Roe v. Wade, Harris demonstrou continuamente um comando dos detalhes. Harris alternou efetivamente entre olhar diretamente para a audiência da televisão quando estava falando e olhar perplexa para o ex-presidente Trump quando ele começou um de seus muitos discursos.

Muitos analistas que assistiram ao debate comentaram sobre a habilidade de Harris em fazer Trump morder sua isca ou notaram que ela o irritou quando falou sobre pessoas saindo de seus comícios mais cedo devido ao tédio ou exaustão. No entanto, muito mais importante do que esses fatos foi que por quase duas horas todos nós testemunhamos Harris falando e agindo de forma presidencial e oferecendo aos espectadores uma visão para o futuro com base em valores compartilhados, oportunidade e educação das pessoas. Alguém pode certamente discordar de suas propostas para melhorar a vida dos americanos comuns, mas não se pode negar que Harris apresentou essas ideias sem arrogância ou insultos.

Do outro lado da tela dividida, vimos um ex-presidente irritado e defensivo que trafica teorias da conspiração e mentiras. Por exemplo, no início do debate, Trump afirmou que em Springfield, Ohio, imigrantes haitianos foram encontrados “comendo os cachorros… Eles estão comendo os gatos. Eles estão comendo – eles estão comendo os animais de estimação das pessoas que vivem lá. E é isso que está acontecendo em nosso país.” Jornalistas que investigaram e desmascararam essa alegação fictícia e grotesca descobriram que ela se originou de um membro de um grupo do Facebook de Springfield que não era uma testemunha ocular, mas, em vez disso, confiou em um relato de quarta mão.

Durante o debate, testemunhamos Trump repetir suas mentiras desgastadas sobre Harris e outros democratas apoiando abortos no nono mês de gravidez de uma mulher. Trump até fez a acusação selvagem de que o companheiro de chapa de Harris, Tim Waltz, estava bem com a “execução” de bebês depois que eles nasceram. Mais tarde, Trump fez a declaração absurda de que a vice-presidente odeia Israel e que se ela se tornasse presidente, o estado de Israel deixaria de existir. Na próxima amplitude, Trump girou e afirmou sem um pingo de evidência que Harris também “odeia a população árabe” naquela parte do mundo.
Todos nós vimos Trump ainda insistindo no debate que ele havia vencido as eleições de 2020, apesar de todos os dados que mostram que ele havia perdido, incluindo recontagens nos estados do campo de batalha e inúmeros desafios legais que não tiveram sucesso. E todos nós testemunhamos o ex-presidente se recusar a assumir qualquer responsabilidade pelo fato de que sua derrota eleitoral de 2020 provou ser a primeira vez na história de nossa nação que não experimentamos uma transição pacífica de poder para a próxima administração.

Após o debate presidencial de 27 de junho entre Trump e Biden, a maioria dos analistas e especialistas políticos, incluindo aqueles da esquerda, corretamente pediram que o presidente Biden desistisse da disputa. Esses comentaristas reconheceram que Biden demonstrou falta de acuidade mental, capacidade de se comunicar efetivamente e resistência para continuar a servir o país por mais quatro anos.
No entanto, o Donald Trump que testemunhamos na terça-feira à noite foi talvez ainda pior do que o que Biden demonstrou em junho. Precisamos reconhecer, se formos honestos conosco mesmos, que Trump se comportou como um indivíduo perturbado e imprudente, alguém que é bom em insultar os outros, mas mal consegue produzir uma frase completa, muito menos um plano coerente para fazer a América avançar. Se não soubéssemos sua identidade e ligássemos nossa televisão na última terça-feira à noite, poderíamos concluir que o homem na tela não se parecia com o 45º presidente dos Estados Unidos, mas com alguém competindo pelo papel de uma estrela de reality show retratando um ditador implacável.
