NOVA YORK — Quando os Orioles garantiram uma vaga nos playoffs em setembro passado, foi uma euforia.
A vitória decisiva e a comemoração selvagem que se seguiu foram adequadas ao que tinha sido uma temporada mágica, com muitos altos e poucos baixos.
Terça-feira, a conquista do playoff dos Orioles não teve a mesma sensação de êxtase. Eles têm mancado até a linha de chegada em meio a um segundo tempo difícil. Lesões incapacitantes e rebatidas fracas transformaram o que era um dos melhores times da MLB no primeiro tempo em um medíocre desde então. Eles estão à beira da conquista há dias, mas não conseguiram vencer.
Mas nada disso altera a realidade da conquista: os Orioles estão voltando para os playoffs.
Após uma seca de seis anos, os Orioles jogarão na pós-temporada em temporadas consecutivas. A última vez que Baltimore garantiu uma vaga nos playoffs em anos consecutivos foi em 1996-97 — antes de Adley Rutschman, Gunnar Henderson ou Jackson Holliday nascerem.
A vitória dos Orioles por 5 a 3 sobre os Yankees na terça-feira foi um sinal encorajador para dar início à última semana da temporada regular — sete dias antes do início dos playoffs. Mas isso não garantiu automaticamente aos Orioles uma vaga na pós-temporada. Em vez disso, Baltimore e seus fãs prenderam a respiração coletivamente por 10 minutos para saber se garantiriam, já que o feito exigiu uma derrota de outro candidato a wild-card mais tarde na noite. O Minnesota Twins forneceu exatamente isso com uma derrota de 4 a 1 para o Miami Marlins, fazendo os Orioles dançarem e, por pelo menos uma noite, fornecendo uma desculpa para ignorar sua preocupante queda de setembro e celebrar sua conquista perseverante.
Enquanto os Orioles passavam setembro presos em areia movediça, os Yankees emergiam da deles. O que era a disputa de divisão mais acirrada do beisebol rapidamente se transformou em um caso desequilibrado. Baltimore tinha uma vantagem de meio jogo sobre Nova York em 6 de setembro, depois de passar os dois meses anteriores com três jogos de diferença um do outro. Mas os Orioles venceram apenas cinco de suas próximas 15 disputas, enquanto os Yankees avançaram para começar a série esta semana no Bronx com uma vantagem de seis jogos.
Embora as chances dos Orioles de defenderem sua coroa da Liga Americana Leste sejam infinitesimais, a semana passada talvez tenha prenunciado dias melhores pela frente. Eles venceram jogos consecutivos de forma impressionante na quinta e sexta-feira. Um quarteto de jogadores lesionados — o reliever Danny Coulombe e os infielders Jordan Westburg, Ramón Urías e Ryan Mountcastle — retornaram da lista de lesionados com a esperança de dar um impulso ao seu clube sitiado. E na terça-feira, eles enfrentaram de igual para igual o melhor time da Liga Americana e saíram vitoriosos.
Como o gerente geral Mike Elias desejou no início deste mês, os Orioles podem estar a caminho de recuperar seu “mojo”.
“Sinto que estamos virando a esquina na hora certa”, disse Henderson no sábado. “Estamos começando a fazer as coisas andarem de novo. Os arremessadores têm arremessado bem a bola na última semana, semana e meia. E agora os bastões estão começando a ir. Parece que estamos indo na direção certa.”
Os Orioles e seus fãs certamente prefeririam que uma disputa de playoff fosse garantida no sábado ou domingo, quando Baltimore entrou nos dois dias com cenários para carimbar seu ingresso para outubro. Mas talvez tenha sido o destino que levou até que Dean Kremer estivesse no monte para que o trabalho fosse concluído.
A chegada de Kremer a Baltimore em julho de 2018 sinalizou o início da reconstrução dos Orioles. O jovem arremessador não era visto como a joia do retorno dos Orioles para Manny Machado, mas acabou sendo o melhor jogador que Baltimore recebeu. No entanto, seu caminho de jovem prospecto dos Orioles para titular decisivo da liga principal não foi linear. Depois de estrear em 2020, Kremer abriu a campanha de 2021 nas ligas principais e foi repetidamente derrotado, ganhando quatro rebaixamentos para a Triple-A e terminando a temporada com uma ERA de 7,55 para um clube que perdeu 110 jogos.
Agora, Kremer começou três dos jogos mais importantes para os Orioles da era Elias. No segundo tempo, parecia que esses Orioles estavam perdendo a magia que aqueles Orioles tinham. Mas o núcleo que impulsionou ambos os clubes para a pós-temporada — uma combinação de estrelas, principais prospectos, rejeitados e sobreviventes da reconstrução — é o que os une.
Os Orioles enviaram cinco jogadores para o All-Star Game neste verão, com Henderson, um candidato ao prêmio AL Most Valuable Player, participando do Home Run Derby e Burnes, um candidato ao prêmio Cy Young, começando pela American League. Mas um grupo de jogadores não anunciados, como Emmanuel Rivera, Albert Suárez e Urías, que fizeram home runs na terça-feira, ajudaram a manter o time à tona durante os períodos mais difíceis da temporada. O jovem Colton Cowser surgiu como o favorito ao prêmio AL Rookie of the Year, enquanto os principais prospectos Holliday e Coby Mayo fizeram suas estreias na MLB.

As dificuldades do segundo tempo dos Orioles são o motivo pelo qual eles acreditam que estão ainda melhor posicionados para uma corrida de playoff do que no ano passado. Esses Orioles mal enfrentaram adversidades. Eles navegaram pela temporada, terminando cada mês com um recorde de vitórias a caminho de somar 101 vitórias. E então a temporada desabou em outubro, quando eles foram varridos pelo Texas Rangers na AL Division Series.
“Temos muitos dos mesmos caras do grupo principal que estavam aqui no time ano passado. Acho que essa experiência vai ser útil”, disse o gerente Brandon Hyde no sábado. “O ano passado foi meio que uma jornada em que muitas coisas deram certo. Ficamos muito saudáveis… e vencemos muitos jogos que talvez não devêssemos ter vencido. Este ano tem sido mais difícil. Este tem sido um desafio maior, e acho que nossos caras só vão melhorar daqui para frente por causa disso.”
Baltimore está agora cinco jogos atrás dos Yankees pelo primeiro lugar na AL East e quatro jogos acima do Kansas City Royals pela primeira vaga de wild-card. Isso torna provável que os Orioles comecem a pós-temporada em Camden Yards na série de wild-card melhor de três da AL.
Será um caminho mais difícil para os Orioles ganharem seu primeiro título da World Series desde 1983. Mas, considerando o rumo que a temporada está tomando, eles não prefeririam que fosse de outra forma.
“Estamos mais testados em batalha este ano”, disse Henderson.
