O aumento nas vendas nos supermercados Waitrose ajudou a John Lewis Partnership a reduzir quase pela metade suas perdas no primeiro semestre do ano.
A parceria – que inclui as lojas de departamento John Lewis e a Waitrose – relatou um prejuízo de £ 30 milhões, abaixo do déficit de £ 59 milhões do ano passado.
A gigante do varejo disse que os resultados eram a prova de que seu plano de recuperação estava funcionando e esperava que os lucros anuais “crescessem significativamente” este ano.
No entanto, as vendas nas lojas de departamento John Lewis caíram em meio a um “mercado desafiador”, e a empresa alertou que as perspectivas para os gastos do consumidor eram incertas.
O varejista vem tentando reconquistar clientes após alguns anos difíceis, com cortes de empregos e fechamento de diversas lojas.
Em março, a empresa divulgou seu primeiro lucro anual após anos de prejuízos, mas também disse que não pagaria bônus aos funcionários pelo segundo ano consecutivo.
A John Lewis obtém a maior parte de seus lucros no segundo semestre do ano, que inclui o importante período de negociações de Natal.
Ao anunciar os últimos resultados, Nish Kankiwala, presidente-executivo da John Lewis Partnership, disse: “Esses resultados confirmam que nosso plano de transformação está funcionando e esperamos que os lucros cresçam significativamente durante todo o ano, uma melhora significativa em relação a onde estávamos há dois anos.”
As vendas nas lojas de departamento John Lewis caíram 3% no primeiro semestre do ano, com a moda sendo afetada pela “bem documentada redução da renda disponível dos clientes e pelo clima fora de época”.
Diana Wehrle, analista de varejo da Rendle Intelligence and Insights, disse que a moda era uma “coisa essencial” para a John Lewis, mas eles estavam enfrentando desafios de redes rivais. “A Marks and Spencer realmente melhorou seu jogo”, disse ela.
A John Lewis disse que a sua estratégia para impulsionar o negócio incluía o retorno da sua promessa de preço “nunca subvalorizado conscientemente”, o que anunciou na semana passada.
A empresa também fechou uma nova parceria com a rede de livrarias Waterstones, que deve abrir sua loja na Oxford Street, em Londres, no mês que vem.
As vendas da Waitrose aumentaram 5% no semestre, em um período que viu a primeira inauguração de uma loja da padaria Gail’s.
Os lucros operacionais da rede de supermercados aumentaram em £ 75 milhões, para £ 113 milhões, nos seis meses até 27 de julho.
A Waitrose também planeja abrir até 100 novas lojas de conveniência nos próximos cinco anos.
A Sra. Wehrle disse que as uniões com a Gail’s e a Waterstones tinham como objetivo atrair mais pessoas para as lojas e fazê-las ficar mais tempo. No entanto, ela acrescentou que “não iria mudar significativamente o dial” nas vendas.
A Waitrose tem sido a “luz brilhante”, ela disse, e as novas lojas de conveniência fazem sentido, já que “grande parte de sua oferta é projetada em porções menores”.
