Caro Eric: Sou uma mulher de 63 anos casada há 45 anos com um homem maravilhoso. Fomos abençoados com um ótimo relacionamento, mas nos últimos dois anos desenvolvi fobia de andar ou dirigir um carro na rodovia. Estou bem nas ruas da cidade e residenciais, mas quando entro nas rodovias comecei a ter medo e ansiedade extremos a ponto de ter ataques de pânico completos.
Isso irrita meu marido imensamente. Ele me diz “Estou louca” e que preciso “puxar minha calcinha de menina grande”. Ele também me chamou de alguns nomes vis que não posso repetir aqui. Sei que é irracional e não consigo entender por que está acontecendo. Agora ele está ameaçando vender meu carro, embora eu não tenha problemas em dirigir até a loja, consultório médico, salão de beleza, etc.
Não tenho seguro que cubra problemas de saúde mental e já avaliei os conselheiros, mas, francamente, não podemos pagar, pois estamos aposentados e temos um orçamento muito limitado. Minha médica não quer me dar remédios para ansiedade, pois ela acredita que eles são viciantes e sugere que eu “simplesmente respire” para combater isso. Não sei o que fazer. Alguma sugestão?

Caro Road: É possível que a linguagem e o comportamento abusivo do seu marido estejam piorando sua ansiedade.
A ansiedade se apega a qualquer coisa que possa, então talvez haja algo mais com o qual você esteja lutando e isso esteja aparecendo no carro. De qualquer forma, seu marido deveria estar apoiando você, não chamando você de nomes.
A National Domestic Violence Hotline, TheHotline.org, pode indicar recursos locais para alívio da maneira como seu marido está tratando você. Só porque ele não entende o que está acontecendo com você, não significa que não esteja acontecendo. O comportamento dele é que é irracional; você está abordando essa situação com preocupação e uma mentalidade focada na solução. Não o deixe tocar nas chaves do seu carro.
Além disso, por favor, obtenha uma segunda opinião médica sobre o medicamento para ansiedade. Muitos médicos discordariam das opiniões do seu médico.
Em relação à terapia, a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, SAMHSA.gov, é um ótimo recurso para encontrar aconselhamento e grupos de apoio gratuitos ou de baixo custo. Também recomendo os livros “Mindfulness” de Mark Williams e Danny Penman e “The Anxiety & Phobia Workbook” de Edmund J. Bourne. É preciso um pouco de trabalho de detetive e muito trabalho interno duro para superar isso. Também leva tempo e paciência. Mas o alívio é possível.
Qualquer pessoa que não esteja viajando com você precisa sair do carro.
