Perdendo por 17 pontos faltando menos de dois minutos para o fim do terceiro quarto, o time de futebol Perry Hall se recuperou com 20 pontos consecutivos e garantiu uma vitória de 27 a 24 sobre o anfitrião Franklin na noite de sexta-feira.
O placar da vitória veio em uma rápida defesa de 17 jardas do quarterback Terrell Hearn para o wideout Vernon Allen, faltando 1:06 para o fim do jogo.
“Isso foi incrível. Só de estar assim e continuar lutando, é isso que realmente queremos ver, é isso que enfatizamos, encontrar maneiras de vencer”, disse o técnico do Perry Hall, Ryan Pittillo. “Quero dizer, esse é um bom time de futebol e é fácil abaixar a cabeça quando caímos assim, mas nós realmente nos unimos, realmente nos destacamos e novamente nossos grandões fizeram uma jogada.”
Franklin (2-1) fez grandes jogadas durante toda a noite, e quando Elijah Mathis retornou uma interceptação de 92 jardas para um touchdown, dando aos Indians uma vantagem de 24-7 com 7:13 restantes no terceiro quarto, parecia que seria o suficiente para encerrar o jogo.
Pittillo colocou o jovem quarterback Jack Sabol no próximo ataque e ele se conectou com Allen em um passe profundo de 51 jardas em seu segundo passe que moveu a bola para a linha de 31 jardas de Franklin.
Depois que os Gators (3-0) perderam a bola quatro jogadas depois, os Indians foram três e saíram e Sabol teve outra chance.
Na terceira jogada do drive seguinte, ele acertou Corey Costner em uma tela rápida e ele correu 43 jardas para um touchdown com 1:16 restantes no terceiro quarto. Mario Gonzalex chutou o ponto extra para fazer 24-14.
“Nós tentamos apenas obter algum tipo de faísca um pouco”, disse Pittillo sobre a troca de quarterback. “Jack chegou e isso é difícil de fazer como quarterback, jogo apertado, para baixo, um pouco de adversidade e simplesmente entrou meio frio. Ele é um estudante do segundo ano, e entrar e jogar assim é inacreditável.”
O heroísmo tardio de Costner estava apenas começando com o TD de 43 jardas.
“Os treinadores me disseram para fazer uma jogada, então foi isso que eu realmente fiz. Precisávamos de grandes jogadores para fazer grandes jogadas, e foi isso que eu fiz”, disse Costner.
A próxima posse de bola de Franklin terminou com um punt após seis jogadas e os Gators assumiram a posse em sua própria linha de 14 jardas. Uma conclusão de Sabol para Allen rendeu 9 jardas, mas após três incompletudes consecutivas, foi quarta e 10 da linha de 26 dos Gators.
Sabol foi substituído por Hearn e lançou uma bola longa para Costner, que enganou alguns adversários e correu 74 jardas para marcar um touchdown faltando 6:02 para o fim do jogo.
“Eu tinha uma costura e eu e meu QB nos olhamos e eu sabia o que estava acontecendo, bola profunda, eu sabia que estava chegando, eu só tinha que fazer uma jogada”, disse Costner. “Você tem que fazer jogadas em campo aberto, é isso que eu faço.”
“Corey sempre encontra um jeito. Corey é um desses caras, se você der a ele oportunidades suficientes, ele vai fazer algo acontecer”, disse Pittillo. “Ele é um desses caras em quem você sempre pode confiar. Ele é um líder e um criador de jogadas, ele é inacreditável.”
Uma tentativa de ponto extra bloqueada deixou os Gators precisando de um touchdown para vencer, e foi exatamente isso que eles conseguiram.
Um sack de Artavien Tubman no segundo down levou a um three-and-out, e os Gators assumiram em sua própria linha de 29 jardas com 4:11 restantes. Hearn lançou passes para Jalil Frazier por 10 jardas e para CJ Crump por 30, preparando o heroísmo da vitória do jogo.
Três jogadas depois, Allen pegou o passe de tela 5 jardas atrás da linha de scrimmage e correu intocado para a end zone.
“Eles lutaram muito, eles queriam mais do que nós queríamos no final do dia”, disse o técnico do Franklin, Anthony Burgos. “Em grandes jogos como este, grandes jogadores fazem grandes jogadas e o nº 5 [Costner] definitivamente mostrou por que ele é um grande jogador.”
Perry Hall dominou o jogo na linha de scrimmage, totalizando 421 jardas, em comparação com 120 dos Indians.
Os Gators tiveram 270 jardas de passe e Sabol e Hearn combinaram 234 delas no segundo tempo. O ataque terrestre de Perry Hall foi liderado por Lamont Smith (11 corridas para 84 jardas), e ele correu 65 jogadas de scrimmage para 37 de Franklin.
Mas os índios construíram a liderança por causa de grandes jogadas e times especiais.
Anthony Gibson retornou um punt de 35 jardas para um touchdown na primeira vez que os Indians receberam a bola e, após um touchdown de 10 jardas de Smith, Franklin assumiu a liderança por 10 a 7 no intervalo com um field goal de 36 jardas de Tanner Hutchins.
“Ele tem feito um ótimo trabalho para nós. Este foi provavelmente seu terceiro ou quarto field goal do ano de uma distância bem decente, então ele realmente tem sido um plus”, disse Burgos.
