A eleição foi inicialmente uma revanche de 2020, mas foi anulada em julho quando o presidente Joe Biden encerrou sua campanha e apoiou a vice-presidente Kamala Harris.
A grande questão agora é: o resultado significará um segundo mandato de Donald Trump ou a primeira mulher presidente dos Estados Unidos?
À medida que o dia da eleição se aproxima, acompanharemos as pesquisas e veremos que efeito grandes eventos como o debate presidencial de terça-feira terão na disputa pela Casa Branca.
Quem está liderando as pesquisas nacionais?
Nos meses que antecederam a decisão de Biden de abandonar a disputa, as pesquisas consistentemente o mostraram atrás do ex-presidente Trump. Embora hipotético na época, várias pesquisas sugeriram que Harris não se sairia muito melhor.
Mas a corrida acirrou depois que ela entrou na trilha da campanha e ela desenvolveu uma pequena liderança sobre sua rival em uma média de pesquisas nacionais que ela tem mantido desde então. As últimas médias de pesquisas nacionais para os dois candidatos são mostradas abaixo, arredondadas para o número inteiro mais próximo.
No gráfico de acompanhamento de pesquisas abaixo, as linhas de tendência mostram como essas médias mudaram desde que Harris entrou na disputa e os pontos mostram a distribuição dos resultados individuais das pesquisas.
Harris atingiu 47% durante a convenção de quatro dias de seu partido em Chicago, que ela encerrou em 22 de agosto com um discurso prometendo um “novo caminho a seguir” para todos os americanos. Seus números mudaram muito pouco desde então.
A média de Trump também permaneceu relativamente estável, oscilando em torno de 44%, e não houve aumento significativo com o apoio de Robert F. Kennedy, que encerrou sua candidatura independente em 23 de agosto.
Embora essas pesquisas nacionais sejam um guia útil sobre a popularidade de um candidato no país como um todo, elas não são necessariamente uma maneira precisa de prever o resultado da eleição.
Isso ocorre porque os EUA usam um sistema de colégio eleitoral para eleger seu presidente, então ganhar a maioria dos votos pode ser menos importante do que onde eles são obtidos.
Há 50 estados nos EUA, mas como a maioria deles quase sempre vota no mesmo partido, na realidade há apenas um punhado onde ambos os candidatos têm chance de vencer. Esses são os lugares onde a eleição será ganha e perdida e são conhecidos como estados de campo de batalha.
Quem está vencendo nos estados-campo de batalha?
No momento, as pesquisas estão muito apertadas nos sete estados-campo de batalha, o que torna difícil saber quem realmente está liderando a corrida. Há menos pesquisas estaduais do que nacionais, então temos menos dados para trabalhar e cada pesquisa tem uma margem de erro que significa que os números podem ser maiores ou menores.
Do jeito que está, pesquisas recentes sugerem que há menos de um ponto percentual separando os dois candidatos em alguns estados. Isso inclui a Pensilvânia, que é essencial, pois tem o maior número de votos eleitorais em oferta e, portanto, torna mais fácil para o vencedor atingir os 270 votos necessários.
Pensilvânia, Michigan e Wisconsin eram todos redutos democratas antes de Trump torná-los vermelhos em seu caminho para ganhar a presidência em 2016. Biden os retomou em 2020 e se Harris puder fazer o mesmo este ano, ela estará a caminho de vencer a eleição.

Como parte do controle de qualidade, a 538 inclui apenas pesquisas de empresas que atendem a determinados critérios, como transparência sobre quantas pessoas foram entrevistadas, quando a pesquisa foi realizada e como ela foi conduzida (chamadas telefônicas, mensagens de texto, online, etc.).

Podemos confiar nas pesquisas?
No momento, as pesquisas sugerem que Kamala Harris e Donald Trump estão a poucos pontos percentuais um do outro, tanto nacionalmente quanto em estados indecisos. E quando a disputa é tão acirrada, é muito difícil prever os vencedores.
As pesquisas subestimaram o apoio a Trump tanto em 2016 quanto em 2020. As empresas de pesquisa tentarão resolver esse problema de várias maneiras, incluindo como fazer com que seus resultados reflitam a composição da população eleitoral.
Esses ajustes são difíceis de acertar e os pesquisadores ainda precisam fazer suposições fundamentadas sobre outros fatores, como quem realmente comparecerá para votar em 5 de novembro.
