A população carcerária na Inglaterra e no País de Gales caiu em 2.188 em uma semana após a libertação antecipada em massa de infratores para lidar com a superlotação.
Havia cerca de 88.521 presos em 6 de setembro — um recorde, com apenas 1,2% da capacidade restante no sistema.
Mas, na sexta-feira, o número caiu para 86.333, de acordo com novos números do Ministério da Justiça.
O programa de libertação antecipada do Partido Trabalhista entrou em vigor no início desta semana.
