No início deste ano, o distrito contratou um encanador para substituir acessórios com altos níveis de chumbo. Se uma torneira apresentar níveis de chumbo acima de cinco partes por bilhão, a água é desligada e uma ordem de serviço é emitida, disse Bergstrom. A equipe de instalações escolares de St. Paul também pretende instalar fontes de água filtrada adicionais em edifícios, para as quais o estado oferece dinheiro de subsídio.
Nas escolas de Fridley, a equipe de manutenção conduziu recentemente uma auditoria de cada instalação hidráulica e implementou um cronograma para que os zeladores limpem o encanamento. O Departamento de Saúde do estado recomenda deixar água correndo pelos canos para limpar qualquer suprimento estagnado após as férias escolares que duram mais de uma semana.
“Queremos que esta seja a última preocupação para nossas famílias e queremos que elas saibam que estamos no controle das coisas”, disse Rochelle Cox, diretora sênior de operações das escolas Fridley. Ela acrescentou que os relatórios de testes e planos de monitoramento estão disponíveis no site do distrito.
Jim Muenzenmeyer, diretor de edifícios e terrenos das escolas do Condado de Carver Oriental, disse que o limite anterior do distrito era de 20 partes por bilhão.
“Não tivemos problemas para chegar lá”, disse ele, acrescentando que reduzir toda a água potável do distrito para abaixo do novo padrão será “bastante fácil”, mas exigirá mais tempo da equipe.
Algumas das leituras mais altas estão em “situações de baixo fluxo” — pias em cantos não utilizados de escolas mais antigas, como em uma sala escura com venezianas longas usada para revelar filmes, disse Muenzenmeyer. Essas torneiras podem exigir um cronograma de descarga mais frequente ou remoção se não forem mais necessárias, disse ele.
