Nova evidência de que houve um ataque de um puma a um menino pequeno no final da semana do Dia do Trabalho enquanto desfrutava de um piquenique familiar em um parque estatal nas montanhas de Santa Mônica sugere que o incidente pode não ter sido tão inesperado como se informe. Os dados de uma necropsia de um puma sacrificado e os hallazgos de um estudo recente sobre ataques humanos e o conhecimento de um veterinário de vida silvestre especializado em pumas sugerem que o ataque de 1 de setembro cumpriu os requisitos que contribuíram para os incidentes entre pumas e humanos.
Segundo informações, a família se mudou para Woodland Hills da Ucrânia, devastada pela guerra, depois de perder sua casa. Ele fez um piquenique na área de uso diurno do parque Tapia, perto de Malibu Canyon Road, na zona não interna de Calabasas, quando um puma saltou da maleza, atrapalhou a cabeça do menino de 5 anos com sua mandíbula e começou a correr com ele. O pai do menino se desequilibrou sobre o animal, o que provocou que o libertasse, salvando-lhe a vida.
Richard Fink, superintendente do parque estatal da Califórnia, disse aos meios de comunicação: “Os leones atacam as crianças pequenas”. Depois do ataque, disse que um de seus guardabosques viu uma árvore no leão da montanha e que parecía estaria aceitando. El guardabosques o dispararam e o mataram.

Um puma em pânico
A razão mais óbvia é que o puma estava procurando comida.
Uma necropsia de animal revelou que era uma hembra juvenil, de apenas 12 meses e até 16 meses. O procedimento sem confronto contido em seu estômago, disse o capitão Patrick Foy, da divisão de cumprimento do Departamento de Pesca e Vida Silvestre da Califórnia (CDFW) em Sacramento em 10 de setembro.

T. Winston Vickers, veterinário de vida silvestre e investigador do Centro de Saúde de Vida Silvestre da UC Davis, é um especialista em pumas do sul da Califórnia. Em uma entrevista de 10 de setembro, especulou que a mãe poderia ter sido separada de sua mãe prematuramente e não ter aprendido completamente o casamento. A principal fonte de alimento de um puma são os cervos. “Qualquer animal tão pequeno não seria capaz de derrubar um cervo grande”, disse. Como a dieta dos leões variava mais do que a dos machos, é possível que ela tenha estado causando mais lucros. “Porque você poderia ter tido uma grande disposição para olhar para outro animal, um humano”, disse Vickers.
Além disso, o jovem poderia significar que não aprendeu a manter-se afastado dos humanos, o que o chamou de “um patrono contrário” adotado pelos pumas adultos.
Uma análise das interações entre pumas e humanos descobriu que crianças e adultos mais pequenos estão sobrerrepresentados nos ataques de pumas, disse.
Um estudo de 2011 sobre os fatores de risco associados aos ataques de pumas a humanos concluiu que os pumas tinham mais chances de atacar pessoas do que os pumas machos.
Além disso, crianças de 10 anos ou menos teriam mais chances de serem atacadas do que adultos.
O estúdio analisou 386 encontros entre humanos e pumas. Também descobri que os ataques aumentaram desde a década de 1970 até 1990, ao mesmo tempo que as mortes. Mas ele concluiu que as interações com pessoas eram pouco frequentes, tanto no Canadá quanto nos Estados Unidos.

Vickers disse que até dois pumas morreram recentemente de gripe aviária e sugeriu que o CDFW fizesse um teste para isso, já que a gripe aviar pode afetar o cérebro e o comportamento.
A necropsia foi realizada pelo Laboratório de Saúde Animal e Segurança Alimentar da Califórnia em San Bernardino, disse Foy.
É seguro em uma área de piquenique?
Se bem as áreas de piquenique são destinadas a humanos que podem assar carnes ou alimentos preparados, e são projetadas para famílias com crianças, isso não significa que sejam livres de pumas deambulantes. Esta está localizada dentro de um parque que foi conhecido por seus avistamentos de pumas.

Ataques anteriores
O parque estatal Malibu Creek está no coração das montanhas de Santa Mónica e pode ter sido por onde passou o famoso “Hollywood Cat” P-22 antes de ser instalado em Griffith Park. Murió depois de ser atropelado por um automóvel em dezembro de 2022.
Um relatório de notícias sobre o último ataque disse que um trabalhador de manutenção viu um puma na área de uso diurno de Tapia aproximadamente duas semanas antes do ataque de 1 de setembro.
Tanto os pumas como os ossos negros foram vistos nos pátios traseiros das casas vizinhas na cidade de Calabasas com bastante frequência, aparecendo um menu em vídeos ao ar livre compartilhados em locais de redes sociais, disse a alcaldesa Alicia Weintraub.
Um puma visitou o pátio traseiro de sua casa no ano passado temprano na manhã. “Me dio bastante miedo”, disse.
Desde 1986, ele viveu perto de 26 ataques humanos no estado, com quatro mortos. Nos últimos anos, ele sofreu seis ataques no estado, com uma morte.
Depois de três anos, um menino, também de 5 anos, foi atacado por um puma também em Calabasas, de acordo com os registros do CDFW. Foi arrastrado pelo césped delantero de sua casa quando sua mãe saiu correndo da casa e golpeou o animal com suas próprias mãos, o que provocou que o animal o soltasse.
Disse aos meios de comunicação que a mãe salvou a vida de seu filho. Se recuperou de suas heranças. Neste dia, um oficial do CDFW encontrou um animal agazapado entre os arbustos, “com as orejas para trás”, informou o departamento. O oficial dispensou o animal, que foi considerado uma ameaça pública.
No dia 23 de março, dois irmãos foram atacados por um puma a 2.800 pés de altura no Bosque Nacional Eldorado, no condado de El Dorado. Taylen Robert Claude Brooks, de 21 anos, morreu e Wyatt Jay Charles Brooks, de 18 anos, resultaram gravemente herido.
Uma publicação feita no site do Facebook do CDFW com respeito ao ataque no parque Malibu Creek por Amanda Welsh, a mãe dos meninos, disse: “Solo passou 5 meses desde o ataque aos meus filhos. Gracias a Deus, o menino que sobreviveu, mas ele e todos os envolvidos agora tenderão a um trauma de vida”.
O ataque no condado de El Dorado foi a primeira morte por um ataque de puma no estado desde janeiro de 2004, quando um puma atacou e matou Mark Reynolds, de 35 anos, enquanto andava em sua bicicleta de montanha em Whiting Ranch Wilderness Parque no condado de Orange. Horas depois, no mesmo parque, um puma atacada e hirió um ciclista de 30 anos.
Desde então, o parque teve vários encontros entre pumas e humanos que obrigaram a vários períodos de fechamento do parque.
Rick Grant, de 68 anos, de Reseda, conheceu Reynolds em carreiras de bicicletas de montanha em Big Bear e Running Springs na década de 1990. Charlaban no estacionamento sobre marcas de bicicletas e carreiras, disse Grant.
