O mesmo pode ser dito sobre a tentativa de escolher vencedores na NFL, que confundiu os apostadores pela terceira semana consecutiva no início da temporada e destruiu as esperanças e os sonhos de US$ 14,3 milhões de milhares de inscritos no concurso Circa Survivor.
O Survivor, com inscrições de US$ 1.000, teve seu recorde de participantes reduzido de 14.266 para 1.630 depois que mais 2.244 inscrições — que equivalem a US$ 2,2 milhões — foram eliminadas no domingo, lideradas pelos Browns (931), Buccaneers (667), Raiders (515) e 49ers (69).
Uma derrota dos Bengals na segunda-feira para os Commanders eliminaria outros 988.
Os apostadores perderam pela terceira semana consecutiva no domingo, com sete azarões vencendo, com 7-6 contra o spread.
O maior favorito no placar não só perdeu pela terceira semana consecutiva, já que os Browns (-6½) foram derrotados pelos Giants por 21 a 15, mas os quatro maiores favoritos também foram derrotados: os Buccaneers (-6) perderam para os Broncos por 26 a 7, os 49ers (-6) desperdiçaram uma vantagem de 14 pontos em uma derrota de 27 a 24 para os Rams, e os Raiders (-5½) foram derrotados pelos Panthers por 36 a 22.
“Hoje em dia, a NFL é como nossa melhor amiga. É tão imprevisível”, disse o vice-presidente da Westgate SuperBook, Jay Kornegay. “Especialmente para o fã médio, tentar escolher vencedores tem sido muito difícil.”
Perda dos Raiders é grande para os livros
Carolina, que foi superada por 73 a 13 em duas derrotas na abertura da temporada, ganhou vida com o veterano quarterback Andy Dalton, que substituiu a primeira escolha geral de 2023, Bryce Young, e lançou para 319 jardas e três touchdowns para estragar a estreia dos Raiders em casa.
“Às vezes você tem aquele pequeno choque quando um técnico ruim é substituído ou o quarterback é mandado para o banco”, disse o chefe de negociação dos EUA da Caesars Sportsbook, Eric Fenstermaker. “Você tem uma espécie de recomeço, e ele pode ter dado um salto inicial na temporada deles.
“Não tenho ideia do que fazer com os Raiders. Quando a temporada deles parecia estar no caminho certo, ela saiu dos trilhos imediatamente.”
A derrota dos Raiders, que vinham da maior surpresa da Semana 2 em Baltimore, foi a maior vitória da história.
“Embora tenhamos visto alguma ação forte no início da semana contra os Panthers e os pontos, ainda éramos grandes fãs dos Panthers”, disse o diretor de apostas esportivas do Red Rock Resort, Chuck Esposito.
Outras duas grandes vitórias surpreendentes foram dos Packers (+3, venceram os Titans por 30 a 14) e dos Eagles (+2½, venceram os Saints por 15 a 12).
New Orleans, que explodiu por 91 pontos em um surpreendente começo de 2-0, assumiu a liderança por 12-7 com 2:03 restantes no passe de touchdown de 13 jardas de Derek Carr para Chris Olave. Mas Philadelphia respondeu com um touchdown com 1:01 para o fim na corrida de 4 jardas de Saquon Barkley, uma jogada depois que Dallas Goedert se libertou na terceira e 16 para uma recepção de 61 jardas e corrida.
“As pessoas realmente acreditaram nos Saints depois de vê-los derrotar Dallas (44-19) na semana passada”, disse Fenstermaker. “Por mais que Philly tenha tentado entregar o jogo, eles de alguma forma o conseguiram para nós.”
O quarterback Malik Willis guiou o Green Bay a uma vitória convincente de virada sobre seu antigo time, os Titans, o chamado lado afiado. O quarterback do Tennessee, Will Levis, lançou três passes que resultaram em touchdowns, mas um deles foi para os Packers, quando ele lançou seu segundo pick-six da temporada.
“Há uma abundância de jovens quarterbacks na liga que ainda estão lutando”, disse Esposito.
Jogos de apostadores
Os Ravens entregaram a maior vitória para os apostadores. Por pouco. Baltimore (-1½) desperdiçou a maior parte de uma vantagem de 28-6 em Dallas antes de segurar para uma vitória de 28-25 e cobertura.
“Você fala sobre a paridade na liga”, disse Esposito. “Depois de três semanas, os Cowboys, Ravens e 49ers estão todos 1-2. E os Vikings e Seahawks estão 3-0.”
Unders foi 9-4. Apostadores que apostaram no jogo Giants-Browns para passar de 38 sofreram uma derrota ruim quando o running back de Nova York, Devin Singletary, se libertou para uma aparente corrida de touchdown de 44 jardas que teria colocado os Giants na frente por 27-15. Mas ele deslizou na linha de 1 jarda para que Nova York pudesse esgotar o tempo.
Aposta de $1 milhão
Um apostador no Caesars Palace apostou US$ 1 milhão no Chiefs na money line (-175) sobre o Falcons no domingo.
O apostador ganhou US$ 571.000 depois que Atlanta perdeu o jogo duas vezes em território de Kansas City nos minutos finais de uma derrota por 22 a 17.
Os Chiefs, bicampeões do Super Bowl, são o time mais próximo de uma garantia na NFL.
