WHITE SULFUR SPRINGS, W. Va. – Foram eles, não ele.
A defesa do Broncos decepcionou Vance Joseph há exatamente um ano nesta semana, falhando em se comunicar, atacar ou fornecer esforço em uma derrota embaraçosa por 70-20 para o Miami Dolphins que exigia sua cabeça.
Em vez de apontar o dedo para os jogadores, Joseph olhou-se no espelho. Isso se perde ao explicar como os Broncos venceram cinco vitórias consecutivas na temporada passada e por que venceram no fim de semana passado.
Tendo todos os motivos para se tornar vulcânico, Joseph permaneceu mais calmo que uma lagoa. Sua crença inabalável criou confiança. Um ano depois, a defesa de Joseph é a razão pela qual os Broncos estão flertando com a relevância.
Em um esporte onde treinadores e coordenadores têm egos maiores do que o Greenbrier Resort de 11.000 acres que os Broncos atualmente chamam de lar, Joseph enfia o seu debaixo do travesseiro como uma bala de hortelã.
“Se você vai ficar muito tempo nesta liga como coordenador você tem que evoluir. Eu odeio dizer que sou um cara 3-4 ou 4-3. Sou um coordenador defensivo”, disse Joseph após um treino encharcado sob as montanhas Allegheny. “Primeiro são os jogadores. É o que está no edifício que permite que você tenha sucesso, então meu esquema sempre se adapta a eles. É assim que você ganha – com os jogadores.”
A modéstia é revigorante, pois é rara. Mas não vamos esperar que Miley Cyrus lhe dê flores. Joseph os merece agora, independentemente de como esta temporada se desenrola.
Não é como se os Broncos tivessem passado do Red Faces para o Orange Rush por causa de uma sorte inesperada de agente livre. Eles acrescentaram peças complementares no lado defensivo John Franklin-Myers, no safety Brandon Jones e no atacante Malcolm Roach. Eles também cortaram Justin Simmons e não fizeram nenhuma tentativa de manter o linebacker Josey Jewell.
Sim, é sobre os jogadores. E pensei que a defesa seria melhor contra a corrida, reforçando Zach Allen e DJ Jones. E é, permitindo 126,0 jardas por jogo em comparação com 177,7 nesta época da temporada passada. Mas treinar é importante. E poucos tiveram três semanas melhores do que Joseph – o mesmo cara que o Broncos Country desprezava como técnico principal e queria demitir em setembro passado.
As estatísticas revelam uma história que Joseph se recusa a contar. Multiple Broncos insistiu neste verão que esse grupo tocaria mais rápido e teria uma disposição desagradável, que Joseph “continuaria aproveitando a onda que criamos no ano passado”, explicou DJ Jones.
Mas foi muito além disso. Eles estão atacando, jogando ladeira abaixo, lutando como se seus oponentes tivessem tubarões-martelo e dentes afiados. Os Broncos estão rolando nas profundezas.
Eles ficaram em último lugar em três categorias críticas depois de três jogos na temporada passada: jardas líquidas, jardas por jogada e pontos por jogo. Eles estão em terceiro, terceiro e sexto lugar, respectivamente, nesta temporada. Uma das coisas mais difíceis de fazer no esporte é ter confiança sem resultados. Joseph inspirou os defensores na temporada passada, quando eles eram péssimos, e agora eles estão em um frenesi de tornado. Eles postaram sete sacks contra o Tampa Bay.
“A confiança é uma das maiores coisas nesta liga. E uma vez que você vê que pode fazer isso, é muito mais fácil fazer de novo”, disse Franklin-Myers. “A primeira vitória é sempre a mais difícil, o primeiro tackle é o mais difícil e o primeiro sack é o mais difícil. Depois disso, você percebe que esse homem veste as calças como todo mundo, então (bip) amarre-as e vá embora.”
Ninguém espera que os Broncos derrotem os favoritos Jets no domingo, embora Sean Payton se vingar de Nathaniel Hackett seria delicioso.
Existe um caminho para uma perturbação. Passa pela defesa de VJ. A linha ofensiva dos Jets é furada, então se os Broncos conseguirem desacelerar o jogo, eles podem derrubar um oponente unidimensional, mesmo com Aaron Rodgers arremessando-o.
Por que? Joseph está treinando com uma agressividade incomum. A taxa de pressão de 44,8% dos Broncos ocupa o terceiro lugar geral e seus 14 sacks estão em segundo. Com três curvas (Pat Surtain II, Riley Moss e Ja’Quan McMillian) proporcionando uma cobertura mais apertada que SaranWrap, a pressa é chegar em casa. E você também viu em Tampa Bay o quanto os jogadores de ponta se beneficiam ao jogar com vantagem, um conceito sempre estranho por aqui.
“A taxa de pressão é apenas planejamento de jogo, certo? Às vezes você vai trazer pressão. Às vezes você não faz isso. Temos uma frente de 3-4, então pode ser um rush de quatro homens que às vezes parece um rush de cinco homens e na verdade não é cinco. Simulamos uma pressão que parece cinco e é apenas quatro”, disse Joseph. “É só marcar jogadas e ter planos de jogo para impedir o que eles fazem de melhor. Essa é a nossa primeira tarefa, e o plano de jogo também ajuda nossos jogadores a navegar em seu trabalho.”
Com todo o respeito a Bo Nix, se os Broncos superarem nesta temporada será por causa da defesa de Joseph. Ele não vai dizer isso, então eu vou.
