O confronto da primeira rodada da pós-temporada do Atlanta Dream contra o Liberty traz uma futura integrante do Hall da Fama de volta para casa na esperança de derrotar a mesma franquia com a qual ela passou algum tempo durante sua carreira na WNBA.
A nativa do Queens e estrela do Dream, Tina Charles, retorna para casa tentando ajudar a eliminar a cabeça de chave nº 1 Liberty, o mesmo time com o qual ela jogou seis temporadas de 2014 a 2019. Charles e seu time entraram no Barclays Center na terça-feira perdendo por 1 a 0 à beira da eliminação na série melhor de três após perderem o Jogo 1 de domingo.
A treinadora principal do Liberty, Sandy Brondello, falou sobre suas intenções de garantir que seu time não tenha que enfrentar Charles e o Dream em Atlanta para um possível Jogo 3, mas ela não deixou de dar flores ao futuro membro do Hall da Fama.
“Ela faz parte desta organização e fez tantas coisas maravilhosas. Ela ainda está jogando em um nível muito alto e é ótimo vê-la de volta à liga”, disse Brondello sobre Charles, que escolheu não jogar a temporada de 2023 da WNBA. “Jogando duro e sei que ela tem muitos fãs no prédio também. Acho que ela aprecia o tempo que teve aqui. Acho que ela está muito feliz com a forma como as coisas funcionaram em Nova York porque — sempre falamos sobre isso — se Nova York for bem-sucedida, isso ajuda toda a liga. Acho que vemos isso agora.”
Charles, que está em sua 14ª temporada na WNBA, teve média de 18,7 pontos, 8,6 rebotes e 2,7 assistências em seus 200 jogos com o Liberty. Na maioria desses anos, o Liberty não estava sob propriedade de Joe e Clara Wu Tsai e não jogou dentro do Barclays Center. O atual proprietário do Knicks, James Dolan, colocou o Liberty à venda em 2017 e a família Tsai adquiriu a franquia em 2019. De 2014 a 2017, Charles e o Liberty jogaram suas partidas no Madison Square Garden e fizeram a transição para o Westchester County Center nas temporadas de 2018 a 2019. O Liberty mais tarde plantou raízes no Barclays Center em 2021 após a saída de Charles.
A ex-aluna do Christ the King fez quatro seleções All-WNBA como membro do Liberty, incluindo três seleções de primeira equipe de 2015-17. Ela ganhou um prêmio de MVP em 2012 como membro do Connecticut Sun e terminou em segundo lugar no prêmio duas vezes com o Liberty. A grande de 6-4 também tem quatro seleções All-Defensive Team em seu currículo, incluindo uma seleção de Primeira Equipe com os Libs em 2017.
Seu currículo carregado continua com oito seleções para o time All-Star, incluindo cinco com o Liberty. Quando ela decidir se aposentar, o nome de Charles entrará para a história como um dos melhores jogadores de basquete a jogar o jogo. E até mesmo o técnico do time adversário acredita que seu nome pertence aos grandes do Liberty dentro do Barclays Center.
“Sim, com certeza”, disse Brondello se ela imagina o nome de Charles no Liberty Ring of Honor no futuro. O ringue é atualmente ocupado por Kym Hampton, Vickie Johnson, Rebecca Lobo, Crystal Robinson e Sue Wicks. As atuais treinadoras da WNBA Becky Hammon e Teresa Weatherspoon também têm seus nomes homenageados dentro do Ring of Honor.
“Ela é uma lenda nesta cidade”, Brondello continuou. “Imagino que ela não esteja conosco agora, mas é ótimo que ela esteja de volta para que as pessoas possam celebrá-la também. Apenas o nível em que ela tem conseguido jogar por tanto tempo.”
Mesmo enquanto ela está ativa, os grandes reconhecimentos já estão chegando. Antes da final da temporada regular da semana passada contra o Liberty, Charles foi introduzida no Hall da Fama do Basquete da Cidade de Nova York junto com outros nove ex-jogadores e treinadores. E durante a vitória que garantiu ao Dream uma vaga na pós-temporada, ela quebrou recordes da liga para duplos-duplos e rebotes na carreira.
