Um paciente surdo com câncer em uma vila remota sem internet ou sinal de celular perdeu consultas médicas porque os e-mails do hospital não chegaram a tempo.
John Bowler, 74, ex-arquiteto, mora em Llangwm, perto de Usk, Monmouthshire, onde os moradores dizem que o problema está causando uma série de dificuldades.
A população local também disse que não há Instagram, Netflix ou trabalho em casa em sua vila “isolada”.
Um porta-voz do provedor de internet Voneus disse que a infraestrutura adquirida do provedor anterior “não atendia aos nossos altos padrões e agora estamos investindo significativamente para atualizar a rede”.
John, 74, disse que acha muito difícil usar o telefone porque é surdo, então depende de e-mails para falar com sua família e médicos.
“A internet é particularmente importante para mim. Sou extremamente surdo e tenho outros problemas de saúde, e tenho muitas consultas no hospital – a maioria delas eu marco por e-mail”, disse ele.
“Eu perco a consulta se não tomar cuidado”, disse ele, acrescentando que “perdi algumas consultas no hospital”.
John teve sua orelha direita removida durante uma cirurgia de câncer, o que ele disse que “precisa de muito acompanhamento”.
Ele também usa um aparelho auditivo preso ao crânio que precisa de manutenção regular.
“Estamos particularmente isolados porque nossos vizinhos estão a 800 metros em qualquer direção e estamos a 275 metros de uma estrada, então você pode passar dias sem ver ninguém”, disse ele.
“Já tive vários ataques cardíacos. Não consigo exatamente correr para um vizinho se estou aqui sozinho.”
Outros moradores contaram que tiveram que subir uma colina próxima — dia e noite — para fazer ligações telefônicas.
Moradores de Llangwm disseram que a internet é esporádica: às vezes funciona, às vezes não.
A pequena vila – com construções que datam do século XII – fica entre colinas onduladas a 4,8 km a leste de Usk.

Ela estava tão farta de ficar sem serviço do provedor de banda larga anterior que decidiu comprar a Starlink, uma empresa de Elon Musk que fornece internet por meio de uma antena parabólica.
“Não teríamos conexão. Eu estava trabalhando em casa, minha filha estava na faculdade. Ela não conseguia acessar a internet, nem eu – era um pesadelo absoluto”, disse ela.
“Eu teria que subir até o topo do jardim para obter sinal 4G ou dirigir até a cidade”, disse ela.
Ela disse que seus filhos tiveram dificuldade para acessar os trabalhos escolares on-line durante a pandemia.
No entanto, Keri disse que mesmo sua nova internet via satélite só funciona efetivamente em um lado da casa, porque, segundo ela, o sinal está bloqueado por árvores.
Enquanto estamos sentados na sala de Keri, esperamos para ver quanto tempo levaria para carregar o site da BBC News em seu telefone – mesmo com o novo link de satélite, demorou cerca de um minuto.
“Chegamos ao ponto em que meu filho não conseguia jogar seus jogos, seu Xbox. Minha filha, com 18 anos, não conseguia contatar seus amigos”, disse Keri.
Logo ali na rua de Keri, Jay Coleman está tentando abrir seu próprio negócio.
“É muito, muito, muito lento”, disse ele.
“A vila inteira fica indisponível. Acho praticamente impossível trabalhar”, disse ele, acrescentando que também tem dificuldade para acessar o Instagram e a Netflix.
“De quinta a segunda ficamos sem internet, sem qualquer tipo de contato com o mundo exterior.”
Ele disse que às vezes precisa dirigir até a cidade “em altas horas da noite” para ter sinal.
Jay acrescentou que tentar entrar em contato com Voneus “é virtualmente impossível”.
A Voneus disse que reconhece “os problemas com nossa comunicação e atendimento ao cliente nesta área e pedimos sinceras desculpas por qualquer inconveniente causado”.
Jay disse que a geração mais velha da vila muitas vezes ficava “presa”.
Jay administra uma agência imobiliária e um negócio de aluguel de temporada, mas recentemente teve que reembolsar uma reserva grande porque os hóspedes reclamaram da falta de serviço de internet e telefone.
Ele disse que o grupo “não tinha como sair da vila para fazer ligações e dizer às pessoas onde elas estavam”, acrescentando que ele teve que levá-las até a cidade para que pudessem fazer ligações.
“Infelizmente, tivemos que reembolsar quase 90% da estadia deles”, disse Jay.
“Foi uma farsa total.”
Um porta-voz da Voneus disse que a empresa tem “trabalhado duro para melhorar a rede em Llangwm”.
“Agradecemos muito a paciência e a compreensão da comunidade enquanto continuamos a atualizar a rede, e estamos confiantes de que as mudanças que estamos fazendo resultarão em uma rede mais forte e confiável para todos na comunidade”, disseram eles.
