No centro histórico de Big Rapids, Michigan, The Old Pioneer Store and Emporium e Kilwin’s Chocolate Shop estão cheios de doces surpresas. Em 2016, a proprietária Carlleen Rose disse que era Trump até o fim.
“Fiquei animada para votar em Trump logo no começo”, ela disse. “Meu marido e eu votamos nele. Eu tinha grandes expectativas. Achei realmente maravilhoso.”
Mas ela diz que ficou decepcionada com o caráter de Trump. Então, em 2020, “eu meio que tampei o nariz e votei em Biden pela segunda vez”.
Rose é um eleitor indeciso por excelência em um estado indeciso. Estados indecisos são aqueles que oscilam entre apoiar democratas e republicanos. Analistas consideram que os estados indecisos mais prováveis deste ano incluem Arizona, Geórgia, Pensilvânia, Wisconsin e Michigan.
“Tivemos eleitos republicanos em todo o estado, bem como eleitos democratas em todo o estado”, disse David Takitaki, cientista político da Ferris State University de Michigan. “Nos últimos anos, vimos isso alternar, tanto em termos de nossa Câmara e Senado estaduais, quanto em termos de nossos eleitos em todo o estado, e diferenças nas campanhas presidenciais de 2016 e 2020. Então Michigan é um estado roxo.”
O estado viu recentemente uma “reviravolta” nas pesquisas, favorecendo Harris, disse ele.
“Se você tivesse me perguntado algumas semanas atrás, eu teria dito: ‘Parece que Donald Trump está em uma rota de voo para vencer em Michigan.’ A maioria das pesquisas o mostrou à frente. Eu vi uma mudança muito significativa que não se manifestou apenas no entusiasmo, mas nas pesquisas. Hoje, eu diria que parece que Harris vai vencer em Michigan.”
Mas o presidente do Partido Republicano de Michigan, Pete Hoekstra, está otimista.
“Fizemos isso em 2016. Achamos que podemos fazer de novo em 2024”, disse ele. “Claramente, é o marco zero. Se vencermos Michigan, venceremos a presidência.”
Os defensores de ambos os partidos trabalharão para monitorar cada voto, com os republicanos pressionando fortemente as pessoas, pela primeira vez, para que votem cedo.
“Obviamente, como isso nos beneficia é — podemos rastrear quem votou”, disse Hoekstra. “Então, conforme nos aproximamos cada vez mais do dia da eleição, as pessoas em que precisamos focar começam a diminuir, ou podemos simplesmente expandir nosso universo para eleitores de baixa propensão e esse tipo de coisa.”
A dinâmica do swing state significa que toda a eleição presidencial pode se resumir a pessoas em apenas alguns condados em alguns estados-chave. Com cada voto importante, os republicanos dizem que um grande foco está na integridade da eleição.
Vários eleitores que tentaram votar duas vezes nas primárias recentes em um condado indeciso de Michigan não foram acusados do que seriam supostos crimes, porque os promotores dizem que os eleitores não tiveram a intenção de causar dano e os votos duplicados foram detectados.
“Há uma tremenda pressão neste ciclo para garantir que tenhamos integridade eleitoral, muitas preocupações sobre o que acontece na cidade de Detroit, o que acontece no Condado de Wayne”, disse Hoekstra. “E ainda temos 53 condados — e você tem que pensar sobre isso — temos 53 condados de 83 em Michigan que têm mais eleitores registrados do que eleitores qualificados… Isso não é possível, certo? Mas é em Michigan. Então, estamos trabalhando muito, muito de perto com o comitê nacional para entrar e corrigir o máximo disso e limpar os arquivos dos eleitores antes da eleição.”
Então, o que dizer da nossa eleitora indecisa — a dona da loja de doces Carlleen Rose — que votou uma vez em Trump e uma vez em Biden?
“Eu com certeza vou votar em Harris”, ela disse. “Eu não poderia apoiar Biden. Ele não era capaz de ser um líder. E então, quando ele renunciou e Harris assumiu, eu me senti realmente entusiasmada. Estou animada.”
