A Lyons High School pode ser pequena, mas o nível de talento que possui no campo de softball faz com que os Lions joguem como um peso pesado.
A saída do ás do ano passado, Ceci Chiaravalle, teria prejudicado um programa normal no ano seguinte. Chiaravalle liderou todo o estado com 255 strikeouts em 23 jogos, e serviu como catalisador para os Lions vencerem regionais e ganharem uma vaga no torneio estadual 3A.
Sua sucessora no segundo ano, Gretta Wynja, já tem 126 strikeouts em 14 aparições, classificando-a em 13º lugar no país e nº 1 no Colorado. Ela é apenas uma das muitas faces do segundo ano que lideram os Lions para um recorde de 10-4 este ano, e credita sua forte defesa por trás dela por sua habilidade de matar no círculo.
“Foi meio assustador um pouco, porque eu tinha sapatos grandes para preencher, mas quando a temporada começou, tornou-se softball novamente”, disse Wynja. “Foi como se eu tivesse voltado ao meu fluxo e tudo veio natural e bom.”
Ela, junto com a receptora Ava Vasquez, a shortstop Leora Hagan e a campista central Autumn Johnsey, jogam juntas desde os 3 anos de idade.
A química entre Wynja e Vasquez, que lidera o time em especificações de rebatidas, estava em plena exibição durante um aquecimento nublado antes de sua partida em casa contra Platte Valley, que eles despacharam com uma surra de 16-0. Ao longo dos anos, eles construíram um bom relacionamento de ambos os lados da home plate.
“Nós podemos simplesmente sentir um ao outro”, disse Wynja.
“Nós apenas nos conectamos”, Vasquez interrompeu.
“Sabemos o que cada um está pensando”, Wynja concluiu, enfatizando o ponto, “como que tipo de arremesso eu quero fazer. Ela sabe o que eu vou fazer.”
“Mesmo quando ela está rebatendo e eu estou no convés, sempre pensamos a mesma coisa”, Vasquez acrescentou. “Como se fosse um arremesso ruim e eles chamassem de strike, nós sempre ficamos tipo, ‘Huh’, e nos olhamos.”
O talento de Vasquez dentro e ao redor do prato é inegável. Suas 14 aparições renderam uma média de rebatidas de .478, 22 hits, 16 RBIs e 24 corridas, incluindo três home runs. O talento dos Lions no diamante rendeu uma classificação de nº 13 no Índice de Seleção e Semeadura da Classe 3A da CHSAA, um número que certamente será testado quando eles se aprofundarem mais na implacável Patriot League.
A treinadora principal e mãe de Ava, Julie Vasquez, passou por tudo isso com elas, desde a primeira vez que pegaram um bastão. Ela disse que a dupla respira softball e está sempre estudando outros times, assim como examinando suas próprias estatísticas.
Ava passou o verão assistindo ao softball de Oklahoma, aprendendo a imitar seus jogadores na caixa do batedor. Claramente, tudo isso tem feito maravilhas aos Lions. Julie disse que mal pode esperar para ver o que eles realizarão no final desta temporada, já que o time visa outra candidatura regional para sediar, bem como uma corrida mais profunda no torneio estadual.
No ano passado, o Lyons foi eliminado nas quartas de final.
“Gretta é arremessadora desde o primeiro dia, desde que eu as treino”, explicou Julie. “Ava nunca se interessou por arremessar, mas realmente queria estar no jogo a jogo, então, naturalmente, a próxima posição depois de arremessar seria a de receptora. Elas arremessam e recebem juntas desde que sabiam arremessar e receber. Vê-las crescerem juntas desde que eram pequenas, arremessando e recebendo, vê-las se destacarem juntas como arremessadora e receptora quando o hino nacional está tocando, quer dizer, isso me dá arrepios.”
