Seis das 10 jogadoras daquele time americano de 1992 seriam introduzidas no Hall da Fama do Golfe Mundial – Betsy King, Beth Daniel, Patty Sheehan, Pat Bradley, Juli Inkster e Meg Mallon. Suas jogadoras ostentavam 21 títulos importantes entre elas, contra apenas duas do lado europeu – Laura Davies e Liselotte Neumann.
Os EUA eram os favoritos em campo.
Mas eles perderam a capitã Kathy Whitworth, vencedora de um recorde de 88 torneios da LPGA, que voltou para casa no dia em que chegaram a Dalmahoy, após a morte de sua mãe.
Whitworth foi inspiradora ao liderar a equipe dos EUA à primeira vitória em Lake Nona, Flórida, em 1990, ao unir “personalidades em vez de qualquer coisa diretamente relacionada ao golfe”, de acordo com Dottie Mochrie (antiga Pepper).
E então o grande vencedor Daniel mexeu no pote, enquanto falava com uma revista de golfe dos EUA. “Você poderia colocar qualquer um de nós no lado europeu e torná-lo melhor, mas os únicos europeus que poderiam nos ajudar são Laura Davies e Liselotte Neumann”, ela teria dito.
A história do esporte está repleta de declarações desse tipo que só servem para alimentar os azarões, e embora Daniel conteste que ela tenha feito esses comentários, Walker os relembra de forma diferente: “Ela disse isso.
“E, claro, o que ela disse estava absolutamente certo, mas quando alguém lhe diz que você não pode fazer algo, ou que é melhor que você, você pensa ‘eu vou te mostrar’.
“Não foi legal ouvir isso e nos fez querer vencê-los ainda mais.”
Daniel foi obrigado a refletir sobre as palavras dela na primeira manhã.
Davies, da Inglaterra, havia vencido apenas um de seus quatro títulos principais até 1992, mas estava bem a caminho de se tornar uma das melhores do mundo. Ela venceu todas as três partidas em Dalmahoy, incluindo o foursomes de abertura, onde se juntou a Alison Nicholas para derrotar Betsy King – e Daniel, é claro.
Davies e Nicholas derrotaram Sheehan e Inkster no segundo dia, enquanto a Europa abriu uma vantagem de um ponto para entrar nas simples de domingo. Davies novamente liderou o time, vencendo a partida principal contra Brandie Burton para definir a plataforma enquanto a Europa dominou o último dia por 7-3 para o mais improvável triunfo de 11½-6½.
“Foi a melhor performance de Laura jogando pela Europa. Ela foi imbatível e simplesmente brilhante, uma líder nata”, lembra Walker.
O clima também teve seu papel.
“Era outubro na Escócia e era horrível”, diz Walker.
“Estava molhado, choveu, o campo estava encharcado e se fosse um torneio normal não teríamos jogado.
“Foi horrível, mas estávamos acostumados com essas condições. Os americanos odiaram completamente. Eles não fizeram condições realmente horrendas e isso jogou a nosso favor.”
Na verdade, foi preciso esperar até Loch Lomond, em 2000, novamente no típico clima outonal escocês, para que os europeus triunfassem pela segunda vez.
