Um pai disse que o suicídio de sua filha de 24 anos o atingiu como uma “carga de profundidade” que “destruiu coisas de maneiras difíceis de descrever”.
Um ano após a morte de Rhiannon, Gareth Williams quer que outros pais saibam o quão “seriamente perigosa” a saúde mental precária pode ser.
Os números mais recentes mostram que a taxa de suicídio no País de Gales em 2023 foi a mais alta em uma década, com uma média de cerca de um por dia.
Os comentários do Sr. Williams ocorrem no momento em que um serviço apoiado pelo governo galês está sendo implementado em todo o País de Gales para dar suporte às pessoas afetadas pelo suicídio.
O Sr. Williams disse que esperava que a ansiedade e a depressão de Rhiannon fossem algo que o tempo, o aconselhamento e o apoio do médico pudessem curar, mas disse que era algo que ele havia “subestimado completamente”.
“Quando você está morando com alguém, você não percebe essas mudanças incrementais. Um dos nossos arrependimentos é por que não vimos isso?” disse o advogado de 60 anos de Swansea.
“As pessoas dizem ‘não é sua culpa’, mas você, como pai ou mãe, sempre carregará isso.”
Rhiannon estava estudando para um mestrado em escrita criativa em Londres – ela sempre foi uma pessoa de alto desempenho e ganhou vários prêmios e reconhecimentos por sua escrita –, mas seus pais disseram que ela deixou Londres abruptamente para voltar para casa.
Ela estava recebendo apoio profissional para sua saúde mental, mas sua família notou uma deterioração nos meses que antecederam sua morte.
No entanto, o Sr. Williams e sua esposa Rachael só descobriram mais tarde as anotações nos diários particulares de Rhiannon, que faziam referência a sites online que ela havia usado para planejar meticulosamente tirar a própria vida.
É uma questão que ainda está sendo investigada antes de um inquérito futuro, mas deixou o Sr. Williams preocupado que até mesmo o quarto de sua filha poderia ser “um lugar perigoso”, onde seus pais não teriam poder para controlar o que sua filha adulta estava fazendo online.
O casal e os dois irmãos mais novos de Rhiannon receberam apoio da Fundação Jac Lewisuma instituição de caridade que foi contratada pelo governo galês para sediar o novo serviço nacional de aconselhamento.
O Sr. Williams explicou que o aconselhamento ajudou com “os sentimentos de culpa que eu acho que provavelmente são mais fortes nesse tipo de luto do que em outros”.
“Eu chamo isso de carga de profundidade, porque é muito particular, como se estivesse debaixo d’água.
“Mas você só precisa reconstruir e olhar para os aspectos positivos. Como pais, estamos muito conscientes de que temos que garantir que nossos dois filhos saibam que a vida continua.”
Gwyn Augustus é o principal oficial de ligação para o novo serviço nacional de ligação consultiva e disseram que de cada suicídio eles normalmente coletam entre seis e 10 encaminhamentos de indivíduos que podem precisar de apoio.
Aconselhamento imediato e gratuito está disponível quando necessário, bem como terapia lúdica para crianças – pesquisas mostram que adultos enlutados por suicídio correm maior risco de tentar suicídio.
“Se pudermos salvar uma vida durante o período do projeto, já valerá a pena, mas até agora tenho certeza de que já fizemos isso”, disse o Sr. Augustus.
“Já foi mencionado muitas vezes que entramos em contato com pessoas que estavam muito chateadas e que estavam pensando em fazer algo por conta própria.
“Poder intervir nesses momentos delicados é vital para o bem-estar deles.”
Scott Lever facilita algumas das sessões de grupo administradas pela Jac Lewis Foundation em Swansea. Ele se tornou um conselheiro após perder seu próprio pai para o suicídio em 2014.
“Há tanto estigma em torno do suicídio que as pessoas realmente não falam sobre isso. As pessoas não sabem como falar sobre isso, e isso pode criar barreiras para acessar apoio também”, disse ele.
“Mas nas sessões de grupo você pode ver as pessoas quase ‘descomprimindo’ quando percebem que outras pessoas estão passando por sentimentos e experiências semelhantes.”
Ele disse que ter esse nível de “autenticidade” na sala pode ajudar as pessoas a “realmente desabafar” o que realmente estão sentindo.
“Ver como esse serviço está mudando a maneira como as pessoas recebem suporte… Tenho orgulho de fazer parte disso porque reconheço que é algo que eu realmente precisava na época.”
O governo galês deve lançar sua estratégia atualizada de prevenção ao suicídio e à automutilação até o final do ano.
Desde seu lançamento em dezembro de 2022, o serviço NHS Wales 111 press 2, que oferece suporte imediato à saúde mental, recebeu mais de 116.000 chamadas.
A Ministra da Saúde Mental e da Primeira Infância, Sarah Murphy, disse que a crescente taxa de suicídio no País de Gales precisa diminuir e que a prevenção é fundamental.
“Ouvir que crianças de até quatro anos estão recebendo aconselhamento pelo tempo que precisam – terapia lúdica e musical – acho que isso também é um papel importante na quebra desse ciclo de trauma”, disse ela.
“Queremos garantir que todos os afetados recebam apoio oportuno, compassivo e eficaz, onde e quando precisarem.
“Por meio do desenvolvimento e implementação contínuos de nossa estratégia de prevenção de suicídio e automutilação, exploraremos o que mais pode ser feito para prevenir o suicídio no País de Gales.”
