HOUSTON – O Houston Texans e o Jacksonville Jaguars estão desesperados para seguir em frente após as derrotas da semana passada quando se enfrentarem no domingo.
Houston abriu a temporada com duas vitórias antes de uma goleada de 34-7 para Minnesota na semana 3. Os Jaguars estão em uma situação muito pior, ainda sem vitórias e se recuperando de uma embaraçosa derrota por 47-10 para Buffalo na noite de segunda-feira.
“Haverá adversidades nesta liga, você enfrentará isso ano após ano”, disse o técnico de Jacksonville, Doug Pederson. “Mas é como você se recupera e luta contra isso.”
O quarterback do Houston, CJ Stroud, que fez suas duas primeiras interceptações da temporada na semana passada, disse que é importante aprender com o que aconteceu contra os Vikings e evitar deixar que os sentimentos ruins daquele jogo persistam.
“Não deixe que um jogo defina quem somos”, disse ele. “É no início do ano que ainda somos um time de futebol muito, muito bom e vamos lá e provar isso. Temos que aprender com nossos erros, mas também não podemos manter a cabeça baixa e não aprender com isso e simplesmente começar a absorver nossa própria tristeza. Portanto, ainda mantenha os ganhos.
O quarterback de Jacksonville, Trevor Lawrence, perdeu oito partidas consecutivas e lançou apenas dois passes para touchdown nesta temporada. Mas ele teve sucesso em sua viagem anterior a Houston, com sua vitória mais recente sendo uma vitória por 24 a 21 contra os texanos em 26 de novembro.
Ele continua confiante de que esta equipe pode mudar a situação, apesar do péssimo começo.
“O jogo da outra noite foi um desastre em praticamente todos os níveis”, disse ele. “Mas ainda temos confiança no nosso grupo, nos nossos treinadores, na nossa equipa. Isso não vai mudar e não pode mudar. Acho que é quando você tem problemas, quando você perde a confiança e começa a apontar o dedo e não houve nada disso.”
A primeira largada de Miller
Com o linebacker Foye Oluokun afastado dos gramados por várias semanas devido a uma lesão no pé, o profissional do segundo ano Ventrell Miller fará seu primeiro início de carreira. Escolha da quarta rodada do draft da Flórida em 2023, Miller perdeu toda a temporada passada depois de romper o tendão de Aquiles. Ele teve seis tackles, o melhor de sua carreira, depois de substituir Oluokun na noite de segunda-feira, mas também teve uma interceptação que escapou por entre os dedos.
Limpe isso
Os texanos estão focados em limpar seu jogo depois de cometerem 23 pênaltis combinados nos últimos dois jogos.
“Passamos muito tempo nisso, conversamos sobre isso”, disse o técnico DeMeco Ryans. “Nós abordamos o assunto e veremos no domingo se foi resolvido e vamos lidar com isso muito bem.”
Eles tiveram 11 pênaltis contra os Vikings, com seis impressionantes vindos do left tackle Laremy Tunsil. Três de suas penalidades foram por formação ilegal, levantando a questão se Ryans planejava treinar com Tunsil sobre onde alinhar.
“Ele sabe onde nos alinhar e só precisamos fazer um trabalho melhor para conseguir isso”, disse Ryans.
Evitando 0-4
Jacksonville está tentando evitar um início de 0-4, o que é um buraco aparentemente intransponível. Apenas um time na história da NFL – o San Diego Chargers de 1992 – chegou aos playoffs depois de começar com 0-4.
Os Jags não venceram quatro jogos cinco vezes antes e nunca terminaram com mais de cinco vitórias em nenhuma dessas temporadas.
Problemas de corrida
Os texanos lideraram a NFL com 213 jardas na semana 1, atrás de um jogo de 159 jardas de Joe Mixon em sua estreia com o time. Mas ele se machucou no início do terceiro quarto do segundo jogo e o jogo corrido do Houston piorou desde então.
Os Texans tiveram apenas 75 jardas contra o Bears e conseguiram insignificantes 38 na semana passada, com Mixon ainda afastado devido a uma lesão no tornozelo.
A equipe também não pode contar com Dameon Pierce, que perdeu os últimos dois jogos devido a uma lesão no tendão da coxa. Mixon e Pierce permaneceram fora dos treinos esta semana e é improvável que possam retornar.
Isso significa que Cam Akers precisa fazer muito mais do que fez em sua primeira largada na semana passada, quando fez nove corridas para apenas 21 jardas. Ryans ficou desapontado com o jogo corrido contra os Vikings e disse que todos no ataque devem contribuir para ajudar a colocá-lo de volta nos trilhos.
