Taylor Swift apoiou a vice-presidente Kamala Harris para presidência na terça-feira, e o governador de Minnesota, Tim Walz, seu companheiro de chapa, aparentemente soube disso durante uma entrevista com Rachel Maddow, da MSNBC.
Em seu apoio, publicado no Instagram, Swift disse que estava particularmente “animada e impressionada” pela decisão de Harris de escolher Walz como sua companheira de chapa, escrevendo que a governadora “tem defendido os direitos LGBTQ+, a fertilização in vitro e o direito da mulher ao seu próprio corpo há décadas”.
Swift pediu que seus fãs e seguidores fizessem suas próprias escolhas e assinou a declaração como uma “senhora dos gatos sem filhos”.
Walz pareceu surpreso quando Maddow leu a declaração na íntegra antes de oferecer sua gratidão.
“Sou incrivelmente grata a Taylor Swift”, disse Walz. “Digo isso também como dona de gato, uma colega dona de gato… Isso foi eloquente. E foi claro. E esse é o tipo de coragem que precisamos na América para nos levantarmos.”
Ele então comparou o apoio de Swift ao ativismo de grande parte da coalizão democrata nas últimas semanas, incluindo republicanos que discursaram na Convenção Nacional Democrata e mulheres que compartilharam suas histórias sobre o acesso ao aborto e aos cuidados de saúde reprodutiva desde que a Suprema Corte dos EUA anulou Roe contra Wade.
“Agora temos alguém como Taylor Swift surgindo, deixando isso bem claro”, disse Walz.
Swift disse que tomou sua decisão em parte por causa da proliferação de imagens geradas por IA dela apoiando o ex-presidente Donald Trump. Trump recentemente compartilhou uma ilustração de Swift vestida de Tio Sam com a legenda “Taylor quer que você vote em Donald Trump”.
