Dylan Guenther veio para ficar.
O Utah Hockey Club e o atacante de 21 anos concordaram com um contrato de oito anos, anunciou a equipe na sexta-feira.
“Este é um dia muito feliz para mim e minha família”, disse Guenther em um comunicado à imprensa. “Tudo sobre esta organização está no caminho certo, e sei que temos uma oportunidade de fazer algumas coisas especiais aqui por um longo tempo. Utah é onde eu quero estar, e estou orgulhoso de me comprometer com meus companheiros de equipe e a organização a longo prazo.”
Elliotte Friedman, da Sportsnet, relatou que a extensão teve um valor médio anual de pouco mais de US$ 7 milhões. Guenther assinou seu contrato de três anos, de nível básico, com o Arizona Coyotes em agosto de 2021, e agora está entrando na temporada final desse acordo.
“Não há melhor exemplo do que Dylan quando falamos sobre a combinação de talento e caráter que nos deixa tão animados para construir uma nova franquia aqui em Utah”, disse Chris Armstrong, presidente de operações de hóquei do Utah Hockey Club, em um comunicado à imprensa. “Hoje é outro dia emocionante para nossa organização e nossos fãs que virão a amar Dylan, não apenas como um jogador de hóquei, mas como um membro de nossa comunidade.”
Guenther impressionou na segunda metade da temporada 2023-24 após ser convocado do afiliado da equipe na AHL, o Tucson Roadrunners. Guenther patinou em 45 jogos da NHL no ano passado e marcou 35 pontos (18 gols, 17 assistências). O ponta direita se conectou bem com o pivô Logan Cooley, e essa tem sido uma combinação consistente no campo de treinamento do Utah Hockey Club esta semana.
“Somos jogadores diferentes e apenas nos complementamos”, disse Guenther sobre Cooley. “Ele é possessivo com o disco, astuto, habilidoso e é um jogador meio chamativo. Eu meio que consigo me abrir e tentar criar espaço e podemos criar um ataque a partir disso.”
Guenther, que foi selecionado em nono lugar geral pelo Arizona no Draft da NHL de 2021, está se esforçando para ser regular no elenco de Utah nesta temporada. Ele disse que trabalhou em todos os aspectos do seu jogo durante o verão e está se concentrando em ser confiável em todas as três zonas para complementar sua habilidade de pontuação.
Com um novo contrato, o nativo de Edmonton tem a oportunidade de moldar a identidade e o legado do que significa jogar hóquei em Utah. Chegando à temporada inaugural do time, ele tem grandes objetivos — e, evidentemente, a confiança da gerência.
“Se quisermos competir por uma vaga no playoff e estar na corrida, os primeiros cinco jogos são importantes. …Começa agora, começa no acampamento”, disse Guenther. “Quanto mais batalharmos e trabalharmos esta semana, isso nos preparará para a temporada e os jogos importantes na reta final. Estaremos prontos para isso.”
