NUEVA YORK (AP) – O alcalde da cidade de Nova York, Eric Adams, nunca foi tímido na hora de mostrar seus trotamundos. Mas nem sempre ele disse como financiar anos de aventura no exterior.
Os fiscais federais revelaram uma acusação aos jovens, dizendo que a democracia realizou viagens para França, China, Sri Lanka, Índia, Hungria, Gana e Turquia, que foram pagas total ou parcialmente por pessoas que buscavam comprar sua influência no governo da cidade.

Adams diz que não há nada mal e não há planos de renunciar. Seu advogado, Alex Spiro, criticou as cargas como uma mistura de insinuações destinadas a atrair o público e manchar o alcalde.

Acusações chaves contra Adams
Adams é acusado de explorar uma relação de anos com pessoas vinculadas à Turquia, que financiou sua viagem e impulsou sua candidatura à Alcalá com doações que o ajudaram a se qualificar para mais de US$ 10 milhões em fundos de campanha pública. As pessoas que não são cidadãos estaduaisunidenses são proibidas de doar candidatos políticos estaduaisunidenses.
Os fiscais disseram que Adams devolveu o favor em setembro de 2021 para garantir que a torre diplomática recebida da Turquia em Manhattan não estaria sujeita a uma inspeção de incêndios, o que certamente fracassaria.
De um momento para cá, um funcionário turco elogiou Adams como um “verdadeiro amigo da Turquia”, após a acusação. Adams supostamente respondeu: “Sim, ainda mais um verdadeiro amigo seu. És meu irmão. Estou ouvindo (sic) para ajudar”.
A acusação disse que Adams também concordou em não publicar uma declaração no Dia de Comemoração do Genocídio Armênio que seria refletida mal na Turquia.
Adams é acusado de conspiração para cometer fraude eletrônica, soborno e receber contribuições de campanha de um cidadão estrangeiro.
Quem foi nomeado na acusação?
Adams é a única pessoa acusada e a única pessoa identificada por seu nome, mas há muitos outros personagens que ocuparam um lugar de destaque na acusação.
É a “função turca”, um alto funcionamento do estabelecimento diplomático turco que, segundo se diz, organizou os benefícios da viagem de Adams e facilitou doações de testamentos para sua campanha; “El Promotor”, um empresário turco que, segundo as finanças, organizou eventos para apresentar Adams aos empresários turcos; e o “Airline Manager”, um gerente geral da Turkish Airlines com sede na cidade de Nova York que reservou voos gratuitos e com grandes descontos para Adams e subidas de classe em classe executiva.
Também estabeleceu “Businessman-1”, o proprietário de uma universidade turca que, segundo as finanças, estabeleceu uma empresa comercial no Brooklyn; a “mulher de negócios”, que o pai de Adams estava hospedado gratuitamente ou com grandes descontos em suítes opulentas no St. Regis Estambul, um hotel de luxo de sua propriedade; além de “Empresário-2”, “Empresário-3”, “Empresário-4” e “Empresário-5”, todos os acusados de serem involucrados em doações testamentárias.
‘El Promotor’
Os fiscais disseram que a pessoa identificada como “El Promotor” urdiu um plano, aprovado pessoalmente por Adams, para canalizar até 100.000 dólares em contribuições de campanha proibidas através de funcionários estaduais unidenses de uma universidade turca, alega a acusação.
De momento, um membro do pessoal de Adams tratou de desalentar a ideia, dizendo que Adams provavelmente não estaria interessado em “contos de jogos” porque “poderia causar um grande escândalo mais adelante”, segundo a acusação. Mas os fiscais disseram que Adams gostou da ideia e ordenou ao seu pessoal que o seguisse.
“El Promotor” supostamente disse a seus associados que valeria a pena apoiar Adams porque algum dia poderia se converter em presidente.
‘Así funcionam as coisas neste país’
De um momento para cá, diz a acusação, o proprietário de uma empresa de construção pretendia recrutar outros na indústria e na comunidade turca para respaldar a Adams com contribuições e obséquios de campanha, e escreve, em parte, que isso “pode parecer como nada contra a corrente, mas infelizmente é assim que funciona”. as coisas funcionam neste país”.
O que disse o advogado de Adams?
Spiro disse aos informa que a conduta descrita na acusação não era ilegal e involucrava em alcalde.
O consulado turco pediu “cortesia”, sem vingança, quando pediu a ajuda de Adams para iniciar uma inspeção de incêndio, disse Spiro, e acrescentou: “Os neoiorquinos fizeram isso todo o tempo”. Nos voos gratuitos e nas melhores, Spiro disse que não havia nada ilegal ou incomum nele.
“Quando você realmente olha para isso, se você toma um segundo para dar um passo atrás e olha para isso, olha os voos dos que hablan, as viagens, os gastos”, disse Spiro. “El vuelo del que hablan, esse vuelo libre, foi em 2017, fez sete anos, cinco anos antes de que fuera alcalde. Presunto encubrimiento

Os agentes do FBI confiscaram dispositivos eletrônicos para Adams em novembro passado, quando um evento foi lançado. Após a acusação, o alcaide apresentou dois telefones, mas não o telefone pessoal. Após a acusação, um membro do pessoal de Adams que se reuniu com agentes do FBI foi desculpado em um momento, foi para o banheiro e roubou o aplicativo de mensagem cifrada que havia sido usado para se comunicar com o alcalde, a função turca, o contato do aerolínea turca e outras.
