SEATTLE — Contabilizar vitórias e derrotas analisando o calendário raramente resulta da maneira que se projeta.
Mas qualquer um que tenha feito esse exercício no começo da temporada sabia que o Miami Dolphins precisava acumular vitórias contra o que é realmente um trecho suave no calendário até o final de outubro. A noção é acentuada pela dura lista da segunda metade do calendário de Miami.
Os Dolphins (1-2), após uma segunda derrota consecutiva por três touchdowns, desta vez 24-3 para o Seattle Seahawks no domingo, enfrentam primeiro o Tennessee Titans na próxima segunda-feira à noite no Hard Rock Stadium. Depois, são jogos fora de casa contra o New England Patriots e o Indianapolis Colts — com a semana de folga no meio — seguidos por um retorno para casa contra o Arizona Cardinals no último fim de semana de outubro.
Todos os quatro jogos teriam sido marcados como vitórias antes da temporada. O cronograma inclinou os prognosticadores a acreditar que estava programado para Miami passar pela mesma velha história: vencer cedo e desmoronar tarde. A segunda metade do cronograma apresenta jogos fora de casa contra times dos playoffs de 2023 em Buffalo, Green Bay, Houston, Cleveland e Los Angeles Rams — além de duas disputas contra os Jets com Aaron Rodgers e um jogo em casa contra o atual campeão da NFC, San Francisco.
Sabendo que vitórias provavelmente serão mais difíceis de serem alcançadas na segunda metade da temporada, os Dolphins não podem se dar ao luxo de cair diante de muitos dos próximos adversários.
Para piorar a situação, os Dolphins ainda estão sem o quarterback Tua Tagovailoa pelos próximos três jogos contra os Titans, Patriots e Colts, já que ele está na reserva de lesionados devido à concussão sofrida em 12 de setembro.
Todos nós vimos como isso pareceu no domingo contra os Seahawks, com o reserva Skylar Thompson incapaz de mover o ataque antes de deixar o jogo com costelas machucadas. Tim Boyle e Tyler Huntley estão no elenco ativo, e Boyle foi o próximo passador quando Thompson saiu em Seattle.
Quem quer que esteja lá atrás, precisa de melhor proteção da linha ofensiva ou de lançar a bola mais cedo — ou de uma chamada de jogada que seja mais adequada para eles. Os quarterbacks dos Dolphins foram sacados seis vezes e acertaram 12 no domingo.
Perder com um quarterback reserva em um dos ambientes de estrada mais hostis da liga — por si só — não foi nenhuma surpresa. Mas foi surpreendente que Miami não conseguiu entrar na end zone, foi 1 de 12 em terceiras descidas, teve 11 penalidades e conseguiu apenas 205 jardas de ataque.
Os Dolphins, abaixo de .500 em uma temporada pela primeira vez na era Mike McDaniel, não mantiveram sequer uma liderança por um segundo singular de jogo nesta temporada. Em sua vitória na semana de abertura, sua única liderança veio quando o tempo expirou e o chutador Jason Sanders conectou o field goal vencedor.
Com 1-2 e em uma posição precária no elenco, dividir os próximos quatro jogos deixaria os Dolphins em 3-4 antes de visitar os Bills no oeste de Nova York para começar novembro.
É fundamental que os Dolphins corrijam as coisas contra times que não estão nos playoffs, já que eles tiveram dificuldades infames contra times vencedores sob o comando de McDaniel.
“Temos um ótimo time que está disposto a corrigir algumas das coisas que não estamos fazendo direito”, disse o wide receiver Tyreek Hill, que foi limitado a seis recepções para 64 jardas nos últimos dois jogos. “Temos alguns grandes líderes que estão mantendo todos juntos. Teremos uma reunião de capitães sobre o que precisa ser mudado e voltaremos à prancheta na segunda à noite.”
Disse o outside linebacker Jaelan Phillips: “Temos que estar lá um pelo outro, entender que isso não nos define. É o começo da temporada. Temos um longo caminho a percorrer. Temos que fazer as correções e melhorar o que precisamos melhorar.”
Junto com Tagovailoa, o left tackle Terron Armstead e o cornerback Kendall Fuller estão no protocolo de concussão da liga após o jogo contra os Seahawks.
Miami pode em breve receber ajuda, na forma de jogadores elegíveis para sair da lista de fisicamente incapazes de atuar (entre eles o linebacker externo Bradley Chubb, o jogador de linha ofensiva Isaiah Wynn e o wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.) ou que começaram a temporada na IR (o wide receiver River Cracraft e o cornerback Cam Smith) após o jogo da Semana 4 contra os Titans.
