A UNLV decidiu permanecer em Mountain West após avaliar uma oferta da Pac-12 reconstruída, confirmaram fontes na quarta-feira à noite.
A decisão significa que tanto a Mountain West quanto a Pac-12 ficaram com sete membros, um a menos que atenda ao requisito mínimo da NCAA para ser reconhecida como uma conferência.
Acredita-se que a UNLV recebeu uma oferta financeira lucrativa da Mountain West, que deve arrecadar quase US$ 100 milhões em taxas de saída das cinco escolas que partiram para a Pac-12.
Taxas adicionais de caça ilegal estão agora em disputa depois que a Pac-12 entrou com uma ação federal contra o Mountain West na terça-feira.
A UNLV parecia ter decidido permanecer no Mountain West na segunda-feira, mas a decisão do Utah State de ir para o Pac-12 fez a UNLV reconsiderar suas opções.
Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State e San Diego State anunciaram em 12 de setembro que deixariam Mountain West para ir para a Pac-12, que consistia apenas de Oregon State e Washington State.
Inicialmente, os dirigentes da Pac-12 esperavam expandir sua presença geográfica adicionando Memphis, Tulane e talvez até South Florida e UTSA, mas essas escolas decidiram na segunda-feira permanecer na Conferência Atlética Americana.
Foi quando a Pac-12 voltou sua atenção para a UNLV e a Utah State.
A UNLV, assim como as outras escolas que deixaram a Mountain West para a Pac-12, deveria à Mountain West uma taxa de saída entre US$ 18 milhões e US$ 20 milhões.
As escolas de Mountain West atualmente fazem quase US$ 6 milhões anualmente em pagamentos gerais. Quanto as escolas da Pac-12 receberão quando a liga for reformada em 2026 é incerto.
A UNLV é um dos oito membros fundadores da Mountain West, junto com a Air Force, BYU, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, Utah e Wyoming. A liga começou a jogar em 1999.
O Mountain West permaneceu intocado nas recentes rodadas de realinhamento, que começaram quando Texas e Oklahoma anunciaram suas intenções de deixar o Big 12 para ir para a SEC em 2021.
O Pac-12 foi o mais prejudicado pelo efeito dominó resultante. Oregon, UCLA, USC e Washington partiram para o Big Ten. Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado e Utah, que deixaram o Mountain West em 2011, saltaram para o Big 12. Cal e Stanford foram para o ACC.
Essas saídas deixaram Oregon State e Washington State sozinhos no Pac-12, tentando encontrar uma maneira de seguir em frente.
A UNLV agora permanece no Mountain West com a UNR, San Jose State, Novo México, Wyoming, Força Aérea e Havaí. Espera-se que a conferência faça um discurso agressivo para adicionar mais instituições.
