Michael Carcone avançou para o centro do gelo enquanto Ben McCartney saía da área e pegava o disco no lado direito.
Os dois atacantes do Utah Hockey Club chegaram perto da rede do St. Louis Blues enquanto patinavam em 2 contra 0 antes de McCartney deixar cair um passe para Carcone no slot para marcar o primeiro gol da pré-temporada na história da franquia.
O gol aconteceu aos 9:42 do segundo período na vitória por 5 a 2 sobre o St. Louis Blues na Wells Fargo Arena em Des Moines, Iowa, durante o jogo de abertura da pré-temporada de Utah no domingo.
Carcone terminou a noite com dois gols. Seu segundo — um gol de rede vazia — veio com um minuto restante no tempo regulamentar.
“Gostei da energia. Os caras trabalharam muito duro”, disse o técnico principal do Utah, André Tourigny. “Acho que eles foram muito bons. Trabalhamos duro e foi uma ótima recuperação.”
Embora haja um punhado de jogadores mais jovens tentando causar um impacto permanente em Utah nesta temporada, a jornada de Carcone tem sido um pouco diferente. O atacante de 28 anos passou cinco temporadas na American Hockey League antes de ser convocado para seu primeiro jogo na NHL com o Arizona Coyotes na campanha de 2021-22.
Carcone se esforçou bastante na temporada 2022-23 com o afiliado da AHL de Utah, o Tucson Roadrunners. Ele foi selecionado para o AHL First All-Star Team e ganhou o Troféu John B. Sollenberger como o artilheiro da liga com 31 gols e 54 assistências. Ele jogou sua primeira temporada completa na NHL com os Coyotes em 2023-24. O canadense foi um grampo da quarta linha e marcou 29 pontos (21 gols, oito assistências) em 74 jogos.
“Só estou tentando moer”, disse Carcone sobre sua mentalidade ao entrar neste ano. “Para mim, é meu condicionamento. Sempre tentando melhorar nisso. Ficar mais forte. Você quer ficar melhor, maior e mais forte.”
Carcone patinou em uma linha com Cole Beaudoin e Kailer Yamamoto durante a maior parte do jogo de domingo. Beaudoin, o pivô de 18 anos, foi a 24ª escolha geral de Utah no Draft da NHL de 2024. Yamamoto, por outro lado, está em sua oitava temporada profissional e está em um acordo de teste profissional com o clube. Embora em diferentes estágios de suas carreiras, o trio está tentando ser notado durante o training camp. Evidentemente, eles têm.

Dylan Holloway abriu o placar para o Blues aos 12:31 do primeiro período antes de Utah sofrer um gol contra por acaso no meio do período para fazer 2 a 0 para o St. Louis. Anton Malmstrom foi creditado pelo gol, mas foi um erro de Utah que tirou o goleiro Karel Vejmelka do patinador extra devido a uma penalidade atrasada. Um gol de power-play de Guenther aos 8:05 do terceiro período e uma cobrança de pênalti de Logan Cooley aos 18:43 colocaram Utah na frente por 4 a 3 depois que Simon Robertsson marcou para St. Louis. Carcone selou a vitória com um gol de rede vazia.
O Utah Hockey Club jogará sua primeira partida de pré-temporada no Delta Center na segunda-feira à noite, quando receberá o Los Angeles Kings para o lançamento do disco às 19h.
“É bem legal. Podemos dizer quando terminarmos de jogar que fomos o primeiro time em Utah”, disse Guenther sobre jogar no Delta Center. “Acho que é legal para nós, é legal para os jogadores, é legal para os fãs. Vai fazer o hóquei crescer no estado de Utah também.”
