Grande parte da atenção dada aos wide receivers de Miami nesta offseason recaiu sobre Xavier Restrepo, Jacolby George e Sam Brown Jr.
A atenção era justificada, já que Restrepo era um recebedor All-ACC que teve mais de 1.000 jardas no ano passado, George era o segundo recebedor de Miami e o terceiro na conferência em jardas recebidas, e Brown era um recebedor produtivo para Houston.
Voando sob o radar para alguns estava Isaiah Horton, que teve 14 recepções na carreira para 174 jardas e um touchdown em duas temporadas na UM. Mas depois de fortes acampamentos de primavera e outono, Horton está mostrando que é tão valioso quanto os outros.
“Zay é um recebedor muito, muito perigoso”, disse Restrepo. “Ele tem todos os atributos, como alguém diria, para um superstar típico. Ele melhorou muito, amadureceu desde que era calouro. Você o vê — toda oportunidade que ele tem, ele aproveita. Acho que uma oportunidade, ele não aproveitou, e ele gostaria de poder tê-la de volta.
“Adoro jogar ao lado do Zay. Fico super animado quando o Zay está em campo. Um ótimo ser humano também.”
Em dois jogos nesta temporada, Horton quase igualou sua jarda do ano passado. Ele tem oito recepções para 136 jardas.
O Pro Football Focus também avalia bem Horton, dando a ele uma nota ofensiva de 77,8, a melhor entre os recebedores da UM até agora neste ano.
“Não posso dizer coisas boas o suficiente sobre esse cara”, disse o treinador da UM, Mario Cristobal. “Esse cara simplesmente trabalhou. Em uma época em que as coisas são mais transitórias e tudo mais, esse cara abaixou a cabeça e continuou trabalhando. Ele superou alguns solavancos, ele superou algumas situações difíceis no gráfico de profundidade e tudo mais, e no final, se vê como um contribuidor significativo para o programa.
“Ele é outro em que o céu é o limite. Grande potencial. Grande, forte, físico, o ataque combina muito, muito bem com ele. A posição combina muito, muito bem com ele. Mas ele também tem versatilidade, o que ainda não demonstramos. Ele fica por dentro. Obviamente, ele tem jogado por fora para nós. Ele vai ser ótimo.”
Emory Williams pronto para assumir a camisa vermelha
O quarterback do segundo ano dos Hurricanes, Emory Williams, provavelmente não verá muito o campo este ano. Cristobal e a coordenadora ofensiva Shannon Dawson disseram que o plano para Williams, que começou dois jogos no ano passado, é ficar com a camisa vermelha nesta temporada.
“Tivemos um ótimo acampamento”, disse Cristobal. “Este foi um acordo prévio para evitar mal-entendidos posteriores. Ele foi muito bem. Ele é um jogador excelente. Achamos que Reese (Poffenbarger) também é um bom jogador. Ele teve alguns snaps outro dia. Mas certamente, Emory fez um ótimo trabalho se esforçando, empurrando seu companheiro de equipe e tendo um entendimento muito claro de como estamos procedendo.”
Williams venceu o jogo da UM contra Clemson na temporada passada e começou a derrota dos Hurricanes para a FSU. Ele deixou o jogo com uma lesão no braço que encerrou a temporada, mas voltou a tempo para o acampamento de primavera.
Poffenbarger, uma transferência de Albany, conseguiu tempo de jogo no lugar de Ward nos dois primeiros jogos da temporada. Ele completou seis de sete tentativas de passe para 20 jardas.
“Com a forma como o jogo foi chamado com ele, eu achei que ele foi bem”, disse Dawson. “Você pode dizer que ele é muito atlético. Ele sai em campo aberto e ele realmente pode correr. Ele pode lançar também. É que nós não fizemos muito isso.”
Simeon Barrow Jr. se adaptou ao calor da Flórida
O jogador de linha defensiva do Hurricanes, Simeon Barrow Jr., é originalmente de Nova York. Ele se mudou para a Geórgia no ensino médio e passou quatro temporadas no Michigan State, então se acostumar com o calor do sul da Flórida foi um ajuste difícil.
Mas depois de meses de condicionamento e dois jogos no clima da Flórida, Barrow disse que está totalmente aclimatado.
“Já estou acostumado, querida”, disse Barrow, rindo.
Barrow começou os dois jogos de Miami, e ele tem três tackles. Ele também teve um desvio de passe que levou a uma interceptação contra os Gators.
O Pro Football Focus dá a Barrow uma nota defensiva de 73,5 em seus dois primeiros jogos na UM, juntamente com uma nota de defesa de corrida de 68,1 e uma nota de pressão ao passe de 70,7.
“Pessoalmente, acho que as coisas estão indo muito bem para mim”, disse Barrow. “Tenho ótimos caras ao meu lado. Tenho um ótimo DC que está chamando as jogadas certas. E posso ver os resultados disso. Vamos 1-0 todos os dias e vamos continuar trabalhando.”
