Depois de uma temporada de altos e baixos, os Yankees esperam que mais alguns altos os aguardem em outubro.
O clube vencedor da Liga Americana-Leste encerrou a temporada regular no domingo, terminando o ano com um recorde de 94-68 após uma vitória por 6-4, atrasada pela chuva, sobre o Pirates no Yankee Stadium. Nenhum time da AL teve um histórico melhor do que o Yankees, o que significa que eles terão a vantagem de jogar em casa antes da World Series, depois de perder os playoffs em 2023 graças a uma série de lesões e fracassos.
“É enorme”, disse Aaron Judge ao Daily News sobre os Yankees que acompanham a AL. “Ano passado, meio que levar um chute na cara e uma nocaute muito boa, não entrar na dança, isso acordou muita gente e abriu muitos olhos sobre algumas necessidades e algumas coisas que precisavam mudar por aqui. Tiramos o chapéu não apenas para a administração e contratando certos jogadores que precisávamos para preencher as lacunas, mas acho que também para os jogadores nesta sala.
Com a temporada regular encerrada, os Bombers agora estão se despedindo no primeiro turno antes da melhor de cinco ALDS. Essa série será estreada no Yankee Stadium em 5 de outubro.
Uma saúde relativamente boa – depois que Gerrit Cole sucumbiu a uma inflamação no cotovelo na primavera – ajudou os Yankees a chegar a este ponto, mas o mesmo aconteceu com o poder das estrelas. Todos sabiam que juntar Juan Soto e Judge formaria uma dupla mortal, mas os dois produziram resultados além dos sonhos de qualquer um, ao mesmo tempo que rebatiam consecutivamente durante toda a temporada.
“Quando você bate atrás de Juan Soto e vê sua disciplina e como ele pode trabalhar nas rebatidas – é sempre uma rebatida difícil – você pode pegar as coisas que ele faz”, disse Judge.
Enquanto isso, Soto chamou Judge de “o maior rebatedor do mundo” no início deste ano.
“Veja os números dele”, continuou Soto, adquirido dos Padres durante o inverno. “Ele é simplesmente inacreditável. Ele torna meu trabalho mais fácil. Ele melhora um pouco a aparência do meu prato. Quando você bate na frente de um cara assim, você sabe que está acertando os arremessos, então ele é o melhor.”
Judge agora está esperando por seu segundo prêmio de MVP depois de cortar 0,322/0,458/0,701 e liderar os majors com 58 home runs e 144 RBI. Soto teria um forte argumento para seu primeiro MVP se não fosse por seu companheiro de equipe, já que o agente livre iminente atingiu 0,288/0,419/0,569 com 41 home runs e 109 RBI.
Embora ocasionalmente dependam excessivamente desses dois, os Yankees também adicionaram uma faísca quando adquiriram Jazz Chisholm Jr. dos Marlins antes do prazo de negociação. Ele forneceu um pouco de pop e aprendeu a tocar o terceiro na hora.
Enquanto isso, Giancarlo Stanton e Austin Wells deram contribuições importantes. Com Cole parecendo normal no final de sua curta temporada e Carlos Rodón preso na rotação ALDS dos Yankees, o clube tem algum tempo para escolher um terceiro titular.
“Sentimos que tomamos uma decisão difícil”, disse o técnico Aaron Boone, “mas uma boa decisão porque temos muita confiança em quem arremessa”.
Embora os Yankees tenham acabado liderando a Liga Americana, nem sempre foi fácil ou consistente para o clube em 2024. Após um início de 45-20, os pinstripers foram 35-41 de 7 de junho a 4 de setembro.
“Sinto que passamos por muita coisa como equipe este ano”, disse Boone. “Terminar com o melhor histórico da Liga Americana é motivo de orgulho. Esses caras deveriam estar orgulhosos por terem respondido a todos os desafios deste ano. Nem sempre foi fácil, mas estamos orgulhosos de termos nos colocado nesta posição para tentar a nossa chance. Estamos entusiasmados com isso.”
Mesmo na semana passada, os agitados, mas incômodos, Orioles disputaram dois jogos no Yankee Stadium antes de os Yankees conquistarem uma divisão que muitos esperavam que o Baltimore vencesse. Os Pirates então fizeram o mesmo, embora os Yankees usassem algumas escalações sem brilho, com estrelas descansando antes da pós-temporada.
Agora é possível que Yankees e Orioles se enfrentem novamente no ALDS. No entanto, os Royals terão uma chance primeiro em Baltimore.
“Você pode escolher quem quiser antes do ano, antes dos playoffs”, disse Stanton. “Se você não aparecer e fazer o trabalho, faça-o, isso não vai acontecer.”
Várias questões da temporada regular permanecerão quando os Yankees começarem a jogar na pós-temporada. O bullpen pode ser o maior.
Embora a unidade tenha se estabilizado recentemente – Luke Weaver se destacou como o mais próximo não oficial da equipe desde que Clay Holmes foi destituído do cargo – os Yankees têm um círculo de confiança limitado e contam com incógnitas e descobertas de pechinchas em situações de alta alavancagem. Holmes também será chamado para grandes eliminações, mesmo que não seja ele quem terminará os jogos.
Quanto à escalação, a fratura nos dedos de Anthony Rizzo, sofrida no penúltimo dia da temporada, atrapalhou os planos dos Yankees para os playoffs na primeira base. Ben Rice foi chamado de volta no domingo, e Boone disse que poderia desempenhar “um grande papel para nós” se Rizzo não tolerar a dor na mão direita.
O que os Yankees fazem no campo esquerdo será um tema de intriga diária em outubro. Jasson Domínguez tem sido um problema defensivo desde a tão esperada promoção, enquanto Alex Verdugo foi um rebatedor abaixo da média nesta temporada. Ambos os jogadores apresentam falhas.
O mesmo pode ser dito de Anthony Volpe. Embora o profissional do segundo ano jogue como shortstop Gold Glove, sua segunda temporada não aliviou as preocupações sobre que tipo de rebatedor ele será.
Com tudo isso dito, outros times dos playoffs têm seus próprios problemas. Com o ingresso para a pós-temporada esgotado, os Yankees acreditam que são o time a ser batido.
“Se jogarmos o nosso melhor beisebol, seremos tão bons ou melhores que qualquer um”, disse Boone. “Mal podemos esperar para ir atrás disso e acredito nesses caras.”
Esses caras também acreditam.
De acordo com Chisholm, o clube dos Yankees fala em vencer uma World Series sempre que pode. A organização não faz isso desde 2009, mas Chisholm acredita que seu elenco será “imparável” nos playoffs.
“Não vamos parar até conseguirmos aquele anel”, ele insistiu. “É isso que tenho ouvido desde que cheguei aqui e é assim que me sinto também.”
